The design of smart materials and adaptive stmctures has required the development of constitutive equations that describe the temperature, stress, strain, and percentage of martensite volume transformation of a shape-memory alloy. These equations can be integrated with similar constitutive equations for composite materials to make possible the quantitative design of stmctures having embedded sensors and actuators for vibration control. The constitutive equations for one-dimensional systems as well as a three-dimensional representation have been developed (7). [Pg.465]

Semiflexible molded polyurethane foams are used in other automotive appHcations, such as instmment panels, dashboards, arm rests, head rests, door liners, and vibrational control devices. An important property of semiflexible foam is low resiHency and low elasticity, which results in a slow rate of recovery after deflection. The isocyanate used in the manufacture of semiflexible foams is PMDI, sometimes used in combination with TDI or TDI prepolymers. Both polyester as well as polyether polyols are used in the production of these water-blown foams. Sometimes integral skin molded foams are produced. [Pg.348]

Rotor speeds are such that dynamic balancing is required for proper vibration control. Also, while the critical speeds are generally above the operating speed, review of the rotor dynamics should not be ignored, jwi ticularly for the dry type. [Pg.116]

Vibration control is one of the key objectives behind any pulsation suppression. Therefore, the end result of much effort is to reduce the magnitude of the measured mechanical vibration. Figure 13-9 provides frequency-variable allowable vibration level criteria. A typical fixed maximum peak-to-peak vibration movement of 8 mil is a reasonable reference however, for many critical applications, a vibration of 2-4 mil is all that can safely be tolerated. The usual precautions regarding temperature and vibration control also apply to the ultracentrifuge. To overcome air resistance and the attendant frictional heating, the compartment in which the rotor spins is evacuated and may be thermostated over a wide range of temperatures. The rotor is mounted on a flexible drive shaft that minimizes the need for precise balancing as a requirement for vibration-free operation. Finally, the rotor assembly is enclosed in an armored steel chamber for safety. At these speeds, a runaway rotor is deadly ... [Pg.77]

The design of vibration control structures and selection of materials for use in them requires a accurate determination of the viscoelastic properties of the polymers used. The modulus that is appropriate for consideration will depend upon the geometry and boundary conditions found in the vibration control structure. [Pg.64]
