Project MATCH

A number of randomized chnical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of CBT for treating substance use disorders, compared with no-treatment control conditions (see Carroll 1996 for review). However, the superiority of CBT over other psychosocial treatments is not as clear. Although some studies have found CBT to be more effective than other treatments, others have found this method to be comparable to other treatment approaches (Carroll 1996). In Project MATCH, for instance, CBT, MET, and 12-step facihtation produced similar outcomes, with each therapy leading to substantial improvement in alcohol-related symptoms during the 12-week treatment period (Project MATCH Research Group 1997). 

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a self-help organization for people whose common goal is recovery from alcoholism, and it is the most widely accessed resource for individuals with alcohol problems (McCrady and Miller 1993). The philosophy is based on the concept of alcoholism as a chronic disease that cannot be cured, but one that can be halted by means of complete abstinence. AA has described 12 principles or steps to guide those in recovery. Twelve-step facilitation, a manual-based psychotherapy to promote AA participation (Nowinski et al. 1992), was equally efficacious, compared with cognitive-behavioral and motivational enhancement therapies, in a large study of treatments for alcohol dependence (Project Match Research Group, 1997).

Although a single project manager may direct activities throughout a project life, he or she will normally be supported by a project team whose oomposition should reflect the type of project and the experience levels of both company and contractor personnel. The make up and size of the team may change over the life of a project to match the prevailing activity levels in each particular section of the project. 

The matrix displayed as Figure 3-7 offers a framework for matching skills with some sample tasks, which helps to define how you may productively utilize team members expertise. This in turn helps to project in general terms individuals roles within the team. Figure 3-8 applies the same technique to allocating skills to project phases. 

The selected technology must match the mechanical limitations of a given cat cracker. All the technologies discussed in this chapter have been commercially proven, therefore the choice must include the total installed costs, as well as the projected benefits to the refinery. 

When considering the need for capital pretreatment equipment, sufficient care should be taken not to propose any particularly sophisticated external or internal water treatment regimen that of itself creates restrictive operational BW control limitations—where boiler design, steam usage, and common sense dictate no necessity for such limitations to be imposed. The overall water treatment program should not be overdesigned but should properly match the needs of the project.
