Valuable assistance in finding information can be obtained by consulting information intermediaries with subject expertise who can identify and access information resources unknown or unavailable locally. These individuals may be in local information centers or may be brokers who specialize in individual information services or creation of compilations of data for a fee. An example of this type of service is the Comprehensive Health and Environmental Monographs (CHEMS) division of Health and Environment International. This service creates detailed reports on the health and environmental effects of a chemical. Professional organizations, database producers, and government agencies can also be sources of experts as well as providers of direct information. In addition to pharmacist-patient education, there are a variety of other resources available for use in patient teaching. These include company-prepared materials such as videotapes and audiotapes for patients, booklets, leaflets, and even periodic newsletters. For some disease states, pharmaceutical companies have formed virtual support groups where questions can be discussed online with various health professionals. In addition, there are texts prepared to assist the pharmacist in determining the most appropriate information for a patient encounter such as the Patient Counseling Handbook ... 

Actions by professional societies - A long history of public service characterizes the professional societies. This avenue should be formally considered when faced with the need to resolve especially complex issues. These societies are a valuable resource in reviewing documents, assisting in clarifying consensus positions, etc. and as a source of ideas for coping with difficult situations.

Oncologists are the main resource cancer patients turn to when they need answers about their treatment. Unfortunately, many doctors are not sufficiently familiar with the latest medical literature about chemotherapy and brain function, or they trivialize their patients concerns. According to a survey conducted in 2007 by the breast cancer foundation and advocacy organization Hurricane Voices, a majority of patients reported that their medical professionals did not offer constructive advice or assistance to help them cope with cognitive changes. Out of 471 respondents—men and women diagnosed with any type of cancer—63 percent said they conferred with their doctors or caregivers, but only 10 percent were satisfied with the support they received. Further, they said their doctors responses were indifferent and/or dismissive 42 percent of the time. 

A side benefit of a safety and loss prevention network is the ability to locate qualified safety and loss prevention personnel who may be searching for a job and, by the same token, to provide a potential source for employment by safety and loss prevention professionals seeking a new position. As most safety and loss prevention professionals are aware, it is extremely difficult to acquire individuals with experience and expertise in this unique field. When a safety and loss prevention position is available, the pool of qualified candidates with such specific expertise is extremely limited. A network can assist in this area by identifying individuals who are looking for employment. Conversely, if the safety and loss prevention professional has been downsized, rightsized, or terminated for any reason, the network can provide an exceptional resource for identifying available job openings within the area. 

In summation, safety and loss prevention professionals should not overlook the vast resources that are available as close as your local colleges or universities. Usually, if the faculty does not have the ability to assist the safety and loss prevention professional with a particular issue, the faculty members will be able to provide guidance as to other potential resources to assist in resolving the issue. However, the safety and loss prevention professional must take the initiative and contact the college or university. If you ask, you will usually receive assistance.
