Certain compounds found in some coal-tar and petroleum pitches are carcinogenic. Individuals working with pitches or exposed to fumes or dust should wear protective clothing to avoid skin contact. Respirators should be worn when pitch dust or fume concentrations in the air are above estabHshed limits. 

A work analysis gives each of the individual work terms on the right as a fraction of W. 

JHAs of individual work operations or tasks and their associated hazards should be included in the plan to help develop effective controls. This system has proven to provide adequate levels of safety in the Gulf of Mexico and other similar areas where it is possible to abandon the location during a catastrophic event. In the North Sea where harsh environmental conditions exist, a different approach to safety has evolved which is based on developing a Safety Case and calculating an Individual Risk Rate (IRR) to show that the risk to any individual working in the facility is As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). 

Note that the following procedures only provide a framework in which specific health and safety procedures for the individual works or premises may be prepared. A senior member of the company or the person nominated as responsible for health and safety in the organization should write the foreword to a company s procedure. To emphasize its importance it should also include a part of the company s health and safety statement. It should be followed by an instruction such as You are required to read the following procedures carefully and comply with the sections relevant to your workplace . 

Muscles are capable of contracting for very long periods of time when the exercise intensity is below 60% VO2 max. For example, endurance times of 3—5 hours at 50% and over eight hours at or below 40% VO2 max are reported.
