Our failure risk analysis and opportunity method and iterative software tool, as part of our New Product Process Innovation (NPPI) Tool Library, promotes systematic collaboration and team-oriented engineering thinking when a new pharmaceutical manufacturing system process and/or product are developed. (We call it opportunity method too, since most risks, if not all, offer new opportunities for innovation.) It is based on our generic process failure risk analysis method that could be apphed to literally any process that involves risk—and innovation is a very risky process. 

In applications, increased capability in PEPT will enable more work with liquids and with multi-phase systems, and product-oriented studies aimed at probing the formation of microstructure. At the other extreme lies large-scale pilot- or process-level study which must be carried out in situ, using the new mobile PEPT camera. It must be concluded, therefore, that none of the above available methods is suited to serve as a standard protocol for an analytical study of polymer swelling. Fortunately, a convenient, easy to use, very reliable method and reproducible for measuring polymer swelling has been developed in the 3M laboratories as an offshoot of a product-oriented research effort. This method is discussed in the following section. 

Market development also shall have to change accordingly from a product-oriented group to a service-oriented group. It shall have to learn to deal less in product characteristics with potential customers and more in market needs with creative research people. It shall be less concerned with finding a market for a product than with finding a product for a market. 

Scientific collaborations across institutional walls are an almost absolute prerequisite for continuing projects beyond testing in small laboratory animals and in order to proceed into a more intensive and application-oriented research phase. During this secondary research phase, promising concepts are taken up, reproduced, and improved until finally - and in only very few cases - a viable product and development concept can be put together. Almost invariably the efficacy of the candidate vaccine needs to be improved and made more reliable. For many new indications, even the tools and models must be established first, by which immunological effects or protection can be adequately measured. 

The product-development methods can be separated into process-oriented and product-oriented categories. The main concern in process-oriented product development is the design. The objective is the indirect improvement of the design or, more precisely, a more efficient design process. Product-oriented methods concern the product itself and the direct improvement of the product.
