Printed Circuit Boards PCB

In general purpose applications competitively priced thermosets are used for the printed circuit board base material which is usually FR4 (Flame Retardant) . One of the main flame retardants used in America is to have tetrabromobisphenol-A reacted into the epoxy resin. Non-halogen systems include additives such as alumina trihydrate, alumina trihydrate/red phosphorus and aromatic phosphates. Flame retardant epoxy coatings are reported to use ammonium polyphosphate with char-forming additives. 

The term prepreg is used for the non-conducting semi-cured layers of FR4 which are used to separate the conducting layers of a multiplayer printed circuit board. Printed circuit broad laminates comprise a layer of prepreg bonded between sheets of copper foil. The Japanese NEC company is understood to be marketing a self-extinguishing reinforced glass-epoxy resin for PCB. 

Cookson s Polyclad Laminates subsidiary, one of the world s leading manufacturers of a full product spectrum of laminate and prepreg materials was recently acquired by the American Isola Group SARL for US 91 million ( 51 million). Isola is ultimately owned by the private equity Texas Pacific Group and Redfern Partners in the USA. 

Multilayer PCB may be reinforced with glass fibre fabric. E-glass is available from the Dielectric Solutions company which has developed an ultra lightweight glass fibre fabric. Its use is claimed to result in a better performing product which is typically thinner and stronger than the competition and which has improved electrical, thermal and other properties. 

Specialist materials include buried capacitance laminate for wireless communication interconnects, servers and measuring instrument applications. This is a 0.002 inch thick glass reinforced material with double treated copper foil on both sides. The key features of this product are claimed to be improved electrical performance, excellent dielectric thickness accuracy and excellent electrical integrity.

BISMALEIMIDE POLYMERS. These relatively new polymeric materials were developed to serve the increasing requirements for materials of high strength in high-temperature applications. Currently, a high percentage of the bismaleimides produced are used for printed circuit boards (PCBs). The materials usually are cured with aromatic amines and then compression molded into the PCBs. Future uses include aircraft structural components where bismaleimides may prove superior for high-temperature skin surface applications as compared with present epoxy composites. 

Most printed circuit board (PCB) production uses the subtractive process (41). In the simplest version, a thin copper foil is laminated to a nonconductor, holes are fabricated, and the unwanted copper etched off. These single-sided boards do not require plating. Known as print-and-etch, this version is used for the most simple printed circuit boards.

Electrical intermittents caused by poor contacts of printed circuit boards (PCBs) is a major source of problems for navigational computers used on nuclear submarines. The cause of the intermittencies has been traced to the presence of dirt, tarnish, corrosion products and organic contaminants accumulating at the pin connector junctions (50). 

In the second stage, the control of production and importation of chemicals is introduced, in response to wide spread use of various chemicals. Registration and evaluation of chemicals become an important part of the system. These kind of measures were taken around 1990 in Northeast Asia, except for Japan, where the first law of this type was introduced as early as 1973, as a response to a serious pollution incident with printed circuit boards (PCBs). 

Waste from electrical and electronic equipment arises at the sorting plant, where the frame, the printed circuit board PCB, the cathode ray tube, etc. are separated for recycling. The remaining plastics fraction is in part flame-retarded, hence contains brominated and antimony compounds. The number of WEEE recycling plants is growing, so that the logistics are no longer a major problem. 

The development of technologies to recycle this rinse water requires an intense research effort and the combination of different water treatment technologies. In the specific case of recycling rinse water for the production of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and semiconductors the key issue is to eliminate the traces of organic compounds that could have a detrimental effect on process baths and on...

The device was manufactured as two parts the first part is a disposable silicon chip - with the electrochemical cells arrays. The sihcon chip was wire bonded to a special printed circuit board (PCB) platform, which was directly connected to the data processing units. The second part of the device is reusable, which includes a multiplexer, potentiostat, temperature control and a pocket PC for sensing and data analysis (for more details see [5]). This design enables performance of multi experiments simultaneously and each electrochemical cell can be measured independently. The total weight of the entire system is -900 g, making it ideal for medical applications. 

Solder masks (solder resists) are protective polymer coatings used on printed circuit boards (PCB s) to prevent solder bridging between conductors during soldering (1-3). The selective application of the solder mask limits the amount of conductor area in contact with the molten solder, minimizing solder usage and slowing the rate of conductor metal contamination in the solder pot. 

A very general question within this modular concept is the choice of circuit board and connection technology. Each pathway in Figure 5.8.7 corresponds to a possible way of building a sensor. Metal packages can be welded directly onto metal inlay parts, and ceramic modules can be directly bonded. All the illustrated modules contain a printed circuit board (PCB). 

In a practical implementation, we have to design the converter, select the switch, and then lay it all out on a printed circuit board (PCB) with great care — to ensure in particular that there is no voltage spike that can kill the switch (nor any other semiconductor devices present on the board). Occasionally, we may therefore need to add an external snubber or clamp across the switch, so as to truncate any remnant spikes to within the voltage ratings of the switch.
