Uses ndReactions. Some of the principal uses for P-pinene are for manufacturing terpene resins and for thermal isomerization (pyrolysis) to myrcene. The resins are made by Lewis acid (usuaUy AlCl ) polymerization of P-pinene, either as a homopolymer or as a copolymer with other terpenes such as limonene. P-Pinene polymerizes much easier than a-pinene and the resins are usehil in pressure-sensitive adhesives, hot-melt adhesives and coatings, and elastomeric sealants. One of the first syntheses of a new fragrance chemical from turpentine sources used formaldehyde with P-pinene in a Prins reaction to produce the alcohol, Nopol (26) (59). [Pg.413]

Short-chain alkylated biphenyls are the principal biphenyl derivatives in commercial use. They are generally produced by Hquid-phase Friedel-Crafts alkylation of biphenyl with ethylene, propylene, or mixed butenes. A series of mixed ethylated biphenyl heat-transfer fluids (trademarked Therm S-600, 700, 800) is marketed by Nippon Steel. A mixed diethylbenzene—ethylbiphenyl heat-transfer fluid is also available from Dow (63). Monoisopropylbiphenyl [25640-78-2] largely as a mixture of meta- and para-isomers is produced by Koch Chemical Co. Monoisopropylbiphenyl (MIPB) was selected by Westinghouse (64,65) as a PCB replacement in capacitors and this is its primary appHcation today. For a time MIPB was also employed as a PCB replacement in pressure sensitive copy paper, but this outlet has since given way to other dye solvents. A similar product consisting of a mixture of j -butylbiphenyl isomers [38784-93-9] (66) is currently the favored dye solvent for pressure sensitive copy paper (67) manufactured in the United States. [Pg.119]

Strain-gauge pressure transducers are manufactured in many forms for measuring gauge, absolute, and differential pressures and vacuum. In addition to the petrolatum tapes and those based on a laminate of p.e. or p.v.c. with an elastomeric sealant or pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, recent developments have centred around self-adhesive bituminous laminates. These tapes are commonly constructed with a p.v.c. backing, whose thickness ranges from 0 08 to 0 75 mm and a bituminous adhesive compound layer to provide a total tape thickness of up to 2 mm. Ethylhexyl acrylate manufacture represented about 15 percent of domestic consumption of the alcohol. The acrylate is the longest chain acrylate ester produced by esterification of acrylic acid.
