There are several ways to bond strain gauge elements. In Figure 3.139, the working element is a tube closed on one end, with the other end open to the process pressure. Four strain gauges are bonded to the outside of this tube. Two of the elements are strained under pressure, and two are not because they are mounted longitudinally and circumferentially. 

Tabbing of high-performance materials needs additional consideration at elevated temperatures to ensure the tab material and adhesive are acceptable at the test temperatures. Some test fixtures, as used for compression testing, are more difficult to use at nonambient temperatures. Additional care needs to be taken on strain measurement, especially if using bonded strain gauges.

Piezoresistive Sensors. The distinction between strain-gauge sensors and pie2oresistive (integrated-circuit) sensors is minor. Both function by measuring the strain on an elastic element as it is subjected to pressure. A pie2oresistive transducer is a variation of the strain gauge that uses bonded... 

Strain-gauge pressure transducers are manufactured in many forms for measuring gauge, absolute, and differential pressures and vacuum. Full-scale ranges from 25.4 mm of water to 10,134 MPa are available. Strain gauges bonded direc tly to a diaphragm pressure-sensitive element usually have an extremely fast response time and are suitable for high-frequency dynamic-pressure measurements. 

There are different techniques to evaluate the quantitative stress level in prototype and production products. They can predict potential problems. Included is the use of electrical resistance strain gauges bonded on the surface of the product. This popular method identifies external and internal stresses. Their various configurations are made to identify stresses in different directions. This technique has been extensively used for over a half century on very small to very large products such as toys to airplanes. There is the optical strain measurement system that is based on the principles of optical interference. It uses Moire, laser, or holographic interferometry (2,3,20).

C. Although it is expensive, it gives a strong and rigid bond that can meet the special needs of strains gauges.
