Precautionary measures

The following information should be read in conjunction with specific guidance and safety data provided by the supplier. [Pg.397]

For limestone dust, the main precautions to be observed are the use of appropriate eye protection and respiratory protective equipment. Such equipment should be of an approved standard. [Pg.397]

The protective measures for quicklime, hydrated lime, lime putty and milk of lime are more comprehensive than for limestone [34.2]. The eyes are particularly vulnerable to damage and adequate eye protection should be worn at all times when handling lime products. Hot lime putties and milks of lime require special precautions as splashes can burn both physically and chemically. [Pg.397]

Protection for the mouth and nose should be provided by the use of approved respiratory protective equipment. In some circumstances, the face and neck can be protected with barrier cream, but this may cause increased sweating, in which case a ventilated visor may be necessary. A cloth worn around the neck may reduce chaffing of the skin by clothing. [Pg.397]

The hands should be protected by gloves with a tight-fitting wristband. Breathable canvas or leather is suitable for dry conditions, but, where lime putty or milk of lime is being handled, waterproof gloves should be used. Any exposed parts of the arms, wrists and hands should be protected with barrier cream. [Pg.397]

Do not use latex gloves. They are permeable to many chemicals and some [Pg.7]

Do not inhale vapors from volatile materials. Severe illness or internal injury can result. [Pg.7]

Tie back or confine long hair and loose items of clothing. You do not [Pg.7]

Do not work alone. Too many things can happen to a person working alone that might leave him or her unable to obtain assistance. As in swimming, the buddy system is safest. [Pg.7]

Report any injury or accident to the appropriate person. Reporting injuries and accidents is important so that medical assistance can be obtained if necessary. It also allows others to be made aware of any safety problems these problems may be correctable. [Pg.7]

Personal Protective Equipment. Personal protective and emergency safety equipment should not be reHed on as the primary protection from aHyl chloride. Prevention of exposure should be considered the preferred precautionary measure. Where the exposure guideline may be gready exceeded, an approved positive-pressure air suppHed or self-contained breathing apparatus with fuH facepiece should be used (51). [Pg.35]

If repairs or additions are made following the pressure tests, the affected piping shall be retested except that, in the case of minor repairs or additions, the owner may waive retest requirements when precautionary measures are taken to assure sound construction. [Pg.1010]

As a precautionary measure to prevent the appearance of maxima, sufficient gelatin to give a final concentration of 0.005 per cent should be added. The gelatin should preferably be prepared fresh each day bacterial action usually appears after a few days. Other maximum suppressors (e.g. Triton X-100 and methyl cellulose) are sometimes used. [Pg.603]

One of the earliest steps in product design is to establish the configuration of the product that will form the basis on which a suitable material is selected to meet performance requirements. During this phase certain design features have to be kept in mind to avoid problems such as reduction of properties. Such features are called detractors or constraints. Most of them are responsible for the unwanted internal stresses that can reduce the available stress level for load bearing purposes. Other features may be classified as precautionary measures that may influence the favorable performance of a product if they are properly incorporated. [Pg.18]

Similarly, when burning low grade, high-ash fuels, the particulate fly ash is also carried through the flue gas system and into the atmosphere unless precautionary measures are taken. Dust control and desulfurization equipment employed today includes ... [Pg.677]

Readers should also have gained some appreciation of how to design and conduct their own mechanistic investigations, even though experimental techniques per se were not emphasized. They will also have come to appreciate what data should be gathered to supplement the kinetics. There are many tricks of the trade on the practical side, only some of which I have cited. Many precautionary measures were mentioned here, and a further source is Pitfalls in Kinetics [Bunnett, J. F. In Investigation of Rates and Mechanisms of Reactions, 4th ed. Bemasconi, C. F., Ed. Techniques of Chemistry, Wiley-Interscience New York, 1986 Vol. VI, Part I, pp 229-246]. [Pg.273]

The analysis demonstrates the elegant use of a very specific type of column packing. As a result, there is no sample preparation, so after the serum has been filtered or centrifuged, which is a precautionary measure to protect the apparatus, 10 p.1 of serum is injected directly on to the column. The separation obtained is shown in figure 13. The stationary phase, as described by Supelco, was a silica based material with a polymeric surface containing dispersive areas surrounded by a polar network. Small molecules can penetrate the polar network and interact with the dispersive areas and be retained, whereas the larger molecules, such as proteins, cannot reach the interactive surface and are thus rapidly eluted from the column. The chemical nature of the material is not clear, but it can be assumed that the dispersive surface where interaction with the small molecules can take place probably contains hydrocarbon chains like a reversed phase. [Pg.225]

Much has been done to improve laboratory safety over the years. Two examples from the author s early experience can illustrate the lack of precautionary measures as late as the 1940 s. [Pg.36]

Most laboratories depend upon a steady supply of electric power, water, and gas. Very unsafe conditions may develop if any of these should fail, so precautionary measures must be taken. [Pg.50]

Several guidelines are available in the literature for the pharmacist who must extemporaneously prepare an ophthalmic solution. The USP contains a section on ophthalmic solutions, as do other compendia and several standard textbooks. Since the pharmacist does not have the facilities to test the product, he or she should dispense only small quantities, with an expiration date of no more than 30 days. Refrigeration of the product should also be required as a precautionary measure. To reduce the largest potential source of microbial contamination, only sterile purified water should be used in compounding ophthalmic solutions. Sterile water for injection, USP, from unopened IV bottles or vials is the highest-quality water available to the pharmacist. Prepackaged sterile water with bacteriostatic agents should not be used. [Pg.432]

Natural gas a clean, reliable, and energy-efficient fuel an odorless, colorless, combustible fuel. These attributes accurately characterize the form of energy known as natural gas. Nevertheless, we are constantly advised to contact the gas service company whenever we detect the smell of gas as a precautionary measure to locate leaks. An examination of the chemical composition of natural gas can explain this paradox. [Pg.180]

In order to identify the critical points during the process, every stage of the process must be analysed. The precautionary measures at the critical points must be designed in such a way that they ensure that the organic integrity is subjected to the least possible risk during the production process. [Pg.48]

In the case of parallel production in processing operations, the precautionary measure may be an adequate cleansing process that has been demonstrated to be effective. In the case of the importers, a measure to be taken may be the introduction of an internal plan to take samples to be tested for possible traces of pesticides. [Pg.49]

The submitters and the checkers prepared the sodium ethoxide in the conventional manner. However, sodium eth-oxide and sodium methoxide are very conveniently prepared by the inverse procedure, as described by Tishler in Fieser, Experiments in Organic Chemistry, 2nd Ed., 1941, D. C. Heath and Company, New York, p. 385 (bottom) The metal is placed in the flask, and the alcohol is added through the condenser at such a rate that rapid refluxing is maintained. It is necessary, as a precautionary measure, to clamp the flask and not to trust to the friction between a rubber stopper and the flask to hold the flask in place. When this precaution is taken, a cooling bath may be used with safety. It is necessary to cool the flask the metal must not be allowed to melt, as this will result in the formation of one large mass with a greatly decreased metallic surface. (Private communication, C. F. H. Allen.)... [Pg.9]
