I was determined to use cloth diapers, and to be the most environ mentally friendly mommy I could be, so I signed up with a diaper service, those nice people who drive around L.A. in natural-gas-powered trucks and recycle their water. (A process I didn t want to know too much about.) Also, we lived in a one-bedroom apartment with no washing machine or dryer, which may have been a factor in my decision to use the diaper service, as opposed to spending every waking hour of my life washing diapers in the kitchen sink.

By far the most common use of petroleum is as gasoline for automobiles and trucks. About 90 percent of the petroleum used in the United States fuels vehicles powered by internal combustion engines. Diesel fuel is used to power trucks, buses, trains, and some automobiles. Heating oil warms buildings and powers industrial boilers. Utilities use residual fuel oil to generate electricity. Jet fuel, produced from kerosene, powers airplanes. Some airplanes use aviation... 

A common requirement for the safe use of all powered trucks is that the drivers are fully trained and competent. 

Trucks. Industrial trucks are the most commonly used form of transportation of materials. They are particularly suitable for chemicals packed in containers and are relatively cheap and flexible in their use. There are two t3 pes hand trucks and powered trucks. Hand trucks have been designed to suit the nature of the load to be carried. The main types are sack trucks, drum or barrel trucks, cylinder trucks, and carboy trucks which run on two wheels (Fig. 2.4). Only the correct truck may be used in safety since each type is specifically designed with a lifting platform suitable for the shape of the containers to be carried. Hooks or similar devices are often used to hold the load firmly to the truck. 

The most versatile power truck is the fork-lift truck which may be powered by an internal combustion engine or batteries. The basic unit is equipped with two forks attached to uprights for lifting standard pallets, but a variety of special-purpose arrangements may be fitted, such as drum grabs and pushing devices. The use of pallets, which are load boards for the assembly of a number of containers to form a unit load , is now almost universal in chemical factories. They are constructed in wood, steel, or light alloy. The most common type is the double-decked pallet which is illustrated in Fig. 2.S.

Minimize the need to push or pull. Use gravity to move material whenever possible. (Use conveyors, power trucks, lift tables, turn tables, or gravity slides/chutes whenever possible). 

Internal powered trucks refer to those trucks that are employed for internal operations within a factory or works and which have proved to be one of the most efficient means in industry of moving materials. They are highly mobile, very flexible in use and can be fitted with a variety of attachments. Because of their mobility and adaptability care must be exercised in their use. Throughout industry there are numerous types and sizes of powered trucks and many of the features that contribute to their safe operation are common to all. Broadly these features divide into three sections ... 

To maximise the performance and utilisation of a powered truck, the conditions under which it operates must be suitable. A recurring cause of fires on i/c engine powered trucks is lack of basic cleanliness. Dust accumulates on the engine which becomes hot, igniting the dust. Leaking fuel pipes are another frequent cause of fires. 

Passengers should not be carried on a powered truck unless there is a properly fitted and suitable passenger seat. Provision should be made for passenger security during truck movement. 

The mechanical handling of materials plays an essential role in industry with the benefits from it being enormous however any laxity in its use can prove very costly in terms of damage to plant and product, and, worse, of injury to employees. Whether the equipment is mobile, as with cranes and powered trucks, or is fixed in position as conveyors are, agreed safe systems of work and procedures for using it must be followed to reduce any risk to a minimum and to ensure the best utilisation possible.

As well as foodstuffs, coconut oil can be used as a feedstock for biodiesel fuel. Various tropical island countries are using coconut oil as a fuel source to power trucks, automobiles, and buses, and for electrical generators. Before electrical lighting became commonplace, coconut oil was used for lighting in India, and was exported under the name cochin oil. Coconut oil can be used as a skin moisturizer, as an engine lubricant and a transformer oil, and acids derived from coconut oil can be used as a herbicide. After World War II most of the electric vehicles disappeared, and electric industrial trucks, streetcars, and boats and submarines remained the only field of application for traction batteries, mostly lead-acid batteries. England has kept about 40,000 electrically powered trucks in service to this day, mostly for service in rural areas, for milk delivery and the like. 

Mechanical handling techniques have improved efficiency and safety, but have introduced other sources of potential injury. Cranes and hoists, and powered trucks and fork-lifts are the primary means for mechanical handling on site. In all circumstances the safety of the equipment can be affected by the safety of operating conditions, site hazards and the operator.
