Handling mechanical

Mechanical handling refers to any powered means for moving or lifting [Pg.221]

All new equipment, whether operated by power or manually, must comply [Pg.221]

Once put into use, all equipment must comply with  [Pg.221]

The uses of different types of lifting equipment are considered in more detail [Pg.221]

The requirements to be met in the methods of work and procedures to be followed for ensuring the equipment is safe in use are contained in LOLER whose main contents are summarized below. [Pg.221]

Mechanical handling refers to any powered means for moving or lifting loads. The more common means are  [Pg.215]

An interesting example of a large specific surface which is wholly external in nature is provided by a dispersed aerosol composed of fine particles free of cracks and fissures. As soon as the aerosol settles out, of course, its particles come into contact with one another and form aggregates but if the particles are spherical, more particularly if the material is hard, the particle-to-particle contacts will be very small in area the interparticulate junctions will then be so weak that many of them will become broken apart during mechanical handling, or be prized open by the film of adsorbate during an adsorption experiment. In favourable cases the flocculated specimen may have so open a structure that it behaves, as far as its adsorptive properties are concerned, as a completely non-porous material. Solids of this kind are of importance because of their relevance to standard adsorption isotherms (cf. Section 2.12) which play a fundamental role in procedures for the evaluation of specific surface area and pore size distribution by adsorption methods. [Pg.24]

Solid-Bottom Basket Centrifuges SmaUer-scale, solid-bottom batch basket centrifuges are available for small test samples, when the sample cannot tolerate mechanical handling or when the traces of solids remaining in a more automated centrifuge would be subject to decomposition or spoilage. [Pg.1735]

Old stores, especially those occupying valuable land in city centres, were built several stories high. Access was by lifts and most of the handling was by hand or with hand pallet trucks. Such stores are occasionally built today, but the general use of mechanical handling has led to the single-storey building close by a main road but away from a city centre. [Pg.173]

With regard to the hazard concern from physical and mechanical handling, the expl nature of the materials can pose a special problem. For example, during pneumatic transfer of samples in fast neutron activation, the polyethylene vials containing the expl approach speeds of 15m/sec and come to rest against a metal stop at both irradiation and count stations. However at PicArsn (Ref 13), in over 1000 irradiations and pneumatic transfers with up to 2.3g of shock-resistant secondary expls such as TNT, HMX,... [Pg.387]

Free-flowing powders, granular, crystalline or fibrous solids that can withstand mechanical handling. [Pg.427]

Large-scale wafer ovens are essentially the small-scale system scaled up. One problem with the mass production of some wafers is that they are too delicate to use mechanical handling and must be moved manually. [Pg.225]

Wray The speed of the Ca2+ release seems to be important faster rises will stimulate these mechanisms better than slow ones. For example, if we put on CPA or thapsigargin, often we will see a substantial elevation of basal Ca2+, but it is quite slow. We don t see a corresponding rise of the basal level of force production in many of the tissues. It seems that there is a lot of Ca2+ there but the contractile machinery is not interested in it. It will presumably also be the case that extrusion mechanisms handle small, slow releases, and hence little or no contraction. [Pg.21]

Most thermoplastics and thermosets can be foamed, many of them into either flexible or rigid foams. The choice is controlled by the blowing agent, additives, surfactants, and mechanical handling. Some polymers can be expanded as much as 40 times their original density and still retain a substantial part of their strength. Most commercial foams are expanded to derisities of two to five pounds per cubic foot. (Water is 62 pounds per cubic foot.)... [Pg.356]

The radical chain fragments resulting from mechanical handling can initiate the formation of block and graft copolymers in the presence of polymerizable monomers. [Pg.352]
