High-power inverters were initially developed for the long-distance transmission of power from a three-phase source to a remote three-phase sink using a DC overhead transmission line or cable. Early DC power transmission used mercury arc thyratrons (gas-filled values or tubes), which functioned in a manner very similar to the early types of thyristors. The on state of the valves was controllable, but the off state was determined by natural commutation made available by the sinusoidal voltages of the sink power system, see Reference 13. A configuration in which / is reduced to zero is called the target transmission tube (TTT). The anode material is evaporated directly on the beryllium window. The anode is irradiated from the back while a significant part of the bremsstrahlung escapes from the front and exits the tube. Optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) has recently emerged as a powerful surface probe [95, 96]. Second harmonic generation has long been used to produce frequency doublers from noncentrosymmetric crystals. As a surface probe, SHG can be caused by the break in symmetry at the interface between two centrosymmetric media. A high-powered pulsed laser is focused at an angle of incidence from 30 to 70° onto the sample at a power density of 10 to 10 W/cm.
