Air-intake system

Applications. Initial appHcations have been largely in military and aerospace areas. These include hydrauHc seals for military aircraft and fuel seals and diaphragms for both military and civiHan aircraft. Shock mounts for EZ are used on aircraft engines. Large fabric-reinforced boot seals are used in the air intake system on the M-1 tank. The material s useful temperature range, fuel and fatigue resistance, and fire resistance were determining factors in this appHcation. [Pg.528]

Such tight mixture control is beyond the capability of the traditional carburetor. Consequently, after sorting through a number of alternatives, industry has settled on closed-loop-controlled port-fuel injection. Typically, an electronically controlled fuel injector is mounted in the intake port to each cylinder. A sensor in the air intake system tells an onboard computer what the airdow rate is, and the computer tells the fuel injectors how much fuel to inject for a stoichiometric ratio. An oxygen sensor checks the oxygen content in the exliaust stream and tells the computer to make a correction if the air/fuel ratio has drifted outside the desired range. This closed-loop control avoids unnecessary use ot an inefficient rich mixture during vehicle cruise. [Pg.565]

The air intake system should be sized to give a minimum pressure drop. Each compressor should have its own intake filter. [Pg.547]

An internal compression system forms several oblique shock waves and one normal shock wave inside the duct of the air-intake. The first oblique shock wave is formed at the lip of the air-intake and the following oblique shock waves are formed further downstream the normal shock wave renders the flow velocity subsonic, as shown in the case of the supersonic diffuser in Fig. D-1. The pressure recovery factor and the changes in Mach number, pressure ratio, and temperature ratio are the same as in the case of the external compression system. Either external or internal air-intake systems are chosen for use in ramjets and... [Pg.487]

Highly aromatic, low- API diesel fuel can also enhance black smoke production. This is due to the fact that more fuel mass is injected per volume of fuel than would be from higher-°API fuel. Also, there are a variety of mechanical factors which can influence black smoke production such as poorly functioning injectors and air intake system problems. [Pg.125]

Find out whether there is any speoiai ventilation system and where the fresh air intake is iocated (toxins can actually be recirculated by a poorly placed air intake system). [Pg.519]

MAJOR APPLICATIONS Poly(p-phenylene sulfide) (PPS) is mainly used in the reinforced form with glass fiber or mineral fillers as a high-performance thermoplastic. It is used for electrical and electronic parts (e.g., plugs and multipoint connectors, bobbins, relays, switches, encapsulation of electronic component, etc.), automobile parts (air intake systems, pumps, valves, gaskets, components for exhaust gas recirculation systems, etc.), and as components for mechanical and precision engineering. Nonfiller PPS is used for fiber, film, sheet, nonwoven fabric, etc. [Pg.714]

Another extrusion-grade polyamide blend is a reactively compatibihzed PA6/polyolefin (PP or LDPE) alloy with some additional olefinic elastomer present for lowering the modulus (Jacquemet et al. 2000). Such low-modulus PA blends (Orgalloy LT series, Arkema) have been qualified for use in automotive under-the-hood air-intake systems such as clean air tubes and ducts. Low density, high chemical resistance to oil and greases, heat-age resistance, fatigue, and vibration resistance have been the main criteria for the selection of this blend in automotive air-intake duct applications. [Pg.1808]

When inside a building and sheltering in place is selected, shelter by closing all windows, doors, and other openings, and turning off air conditioners and air intake systems. Personnel should move to the side of the building farthest from the release. [Pg.325]

Typically, a malfunctioning heater circulates the carbon monoxide it produces through its air intake system back into a dwelling space. Installing the catalyst in the air intake would oxidize any carbon monoxide to nontoxic carbon dioxide before it reentered the room. [Pg.261]

For larger applications, such as gas turbines, the need for clean filtered air is essential. Typically, these systems are compact and incorporate an all-welded steel construction. The filters are usually made from tmiformly pleated cellulose media, or spunbonded nonwovens, held in a steel frame, as illustrated in Figure 6.37, which shows a cutaway of an air intake system. In operation, dust-laden air enters through the weather louvres and passes through a series of filters (prefilter and fine filters). The cleaned air then moves into a clean air plenum and on into the turbine intake. [Pg.419]
