The OPA should not be confiised with an optical parametric oscillator (OPO), a resonant-cavity parametric device that is syncln-onously pumped by a femtosecond, mode-locked oscillator. 14 fs pulses, tunable over much of the visible regime, have been obtained by Hache and co-workers [49, with a BBO OPO pumped by a self-mode-locked Ti-sapphire oscillator. [Pg.1972]

Resonant Sound Absorbers. Two other types of sound-absorbing treatments, resonant panel absorbers and resonant cavity absorbers (Helmholtz resonators), are used in special appHcations, usually to absorb low frequency sounds in a narrow range of frequencies. Resonant panel absorbers consist of thin plywood or other membrane-like materials installed over a sealed airspace. These absorbers are tuned to specific frequencies, which are a function of the mass of the membrane and the depth of the airspace behind it. Resonant cavity absorbers consist of a volume of air with a restricted aperture to the sound field. They are tuned to specific frequencies, which are a function of the volume of the cavity and the size and geometry of the aperture. [Pg.312]

Sensitivity can be improved by factors of 10 using intracavity absorption, placing an absorber inside a laser resonator cavity and detecting dips in the laser emission spectmm. The enhancement results from both the increased effective path length, and selective quenching of laser modes that suffer losses by being in resonance with an absorption feature. [Pg.321]

The use of a resonance cavity results, as mentioned, in a sensitivity that is approximately one order of magnitude greater than that for a normal reflection cell. The consequence is, however, a sacrifice in time resolution, which is typically also of one order of magnitude. [Pg.450]

ESR characterization was performed in situ in order to avoid any contact of the pretreated solids with air. Spectra, recorded as the first derivative of the absorption, were obtained at room temperature or 77K using a Varian E9 spectrometer working in the X band. The cylindrical resonant cavity which operates in the TE0n mode is another very useful design. The Hi and Ei field lines of force for this cavity are shown in Fig. 9. One commercially available cavity of this type has a bottom which can be screwed in and out, thus changing the resonant microwave frequency over a limited range. [Pg.283]

Later, after von Neumann died, I saw his memoirs, and he had written a long series of discussions about putting a semiconductor near an atomic pile, producing neutrons which would excite the electrons in the semiconductor. He hoped to get very intense light out of the excited electrons, and he talked about stimulated emission. Apparently, he had sent this proposal to Edward Teller saying, Don t you think we should try this Edward Teller never bothered to answer. And so von Neumann dropped it. Semiconductor laser diodes are widely used in CD players, DVDs, printers, telecommunication or laser pointers. In the structure, they are similar to LEDs but they have a resonant cavity where laser amplification takes place. A Fabry-Perot cavity is established by polishing the end facets of the junction diode (so that they act as mirrors) and also by roughening the side edges to prevent leakage of light from the sides of the device. This structure is known as a homojunction laser and is a very basic one. Contemporary laser diodes are manufactured as double heterojunction structures. [Pg.53]
