The polymer chains dissolved in a relatively mild impeller mixer have been mechanically broken the least consequently, these solutions have large [1-n] values. The molecules that have been subjected to severe shearing conditions (380 psi across the orifice) exhibit a Newtonian behavior indicating that the polymer chains have been broken down into short segments.

As Talias (2007) has pointed out, there is an interesting analogy between the Pearson Index and the Neyman-Pearson lemma. (The Pearsons in question are different. Alan Pearson is the author of the Pearson index and Egon Pearson, 1895-1980, was the son of Karl Pearson, 1857-1936 and the collaborator of Jerzey Neyman, 1894-1981, in developing hypothesis testing.) Both are relevant to optimizing a function subject to a constraint. In the case of the Pearson index this is profit subject to total cost, and for the Neyman-Pearson lemma it is power subject to the constraint of an overall type I error rate. In both cases a ratio plays a key role. For the Neyman-Pearson lemma this is the likelihood ratio and for the Pearson index the index itself is a ratio of expected profit to expected cost.

Hydraulic fracturing fluids are solutions of high-molecular-weight polymers whose rheological behavior is non-Newtonian. To describe the flow behavior of these fluids, it is customary to characterize the fluid by the Power Law parameters of Consistency Index (K) and Behavior Index (n). These parameters are obtained experimentally by subjecting the fluid to a series of different shear rates (y) and measuring the resultant shear stresses (t). Since its inception, the concept of electrophilicity index as the theoretical measure of the electrophilic power of an electrophile has attracted considerable interests in the literature. There has been a comprehensive review in Chemical Reviews by Chattaraj et al. [40] specifically on this topic. Passive biomonitoring was applied to estimate the air quality in the La Spezia district, Italy, with regard to a coal-fired power plant and other industrial activities (Nimis et al., 1990). The majority of results so far available in this Held have been derived from spectra recorded on dispersive instruments. In order to test tl validity of Eq. Other investigators over the years have studied the effect of osteopathic manipulation on the immune system. Castilio and Ferris-Swift studied the effect of manipulation in the splenic region on blood indices. They found an average increase of 2,000 in the leukocjAe count in 80% of the cases with a right shift and an increase in the opsonic index in as many cases. The bacteri-oIjAic power of the serum was found to be increased in 68% of the subjects, and a decrease in the erjAhrocjAe count was found in 75% of the cases.
