Portfolios

Despite such improvements, exploration remains a high risk activity. Many international oil and gas companies have large portfolios of exploration interests, each with their own geological and fiscal characteristics and with differing probabilities of finding oil or gas. Managing such exploration assets and associated operations in many countries represents a major task. 

Usually a company will have a portfolio of assets which are at different stages of the described life cycle. Proper management of the asset base will allow optimisation of financial, technical and human resources. 

Total sales of the fine chemical industry were estimated to amount to about 12 biUion in 1991, by an in-depth analysis of the product portfolio of representative fine chemicals manufacturers (11) and by performing top-down analyses of the fife science industry (12). However, some consulting firms gave higher (- 60 x 10 ) figures for the size of the fine chemicals business (13). 

This revenue has to pay not only for the successful project but for all the unsuccessful research and development activities. It is common practice to consider all R D as a portfolio. Disbursements for R D are relatively flexible and can be switched from less favorable to more favorable projects at short notice.

The choice of the appropriate azeotropic distillation method and the resulting flowsheet for the separation of a particular mixture are strong functions of the separation objective. For example, it may be desirable to recover all constituents of the original feed mixture as pure components, or only some as pure components and some as azeotropic mixtures suitable for recycle. Not every objective may be obtainable by azeotropic distillation for a given mixture and portfolio of candidate entrainers.
