Portfolio expansion

Middle East chemical companies are planning aggressive growth, and are in a position to pursue it along the three dimensions of local capacity expansion, portfolio expansion and forward integration, and geographic expansion into new markets. 

Geographic expansion means access to new markets, more sophisticated skills (e.g., marketing, product development, process technologies), and new talent, as well as broadening the product portfolio. 

In 2000, again after some wrong turns, the FERC mandated that pipeline companies price new or expanded services on an incremental basis. Setting incremental pricing as the default rule for new pipeline construction put an end to the fight over traditional certification. If a pipeline company approached the Commission with a new proposal, it was no longer required to demonstrate connected gas supplies. With a portfolio of letters of intent from committed incremental shippers, the Commission had virtual prima facie evidence of economic need. The typical time period needed to plan and construct a typical large-scale pipeline expansion project dropped from five years to two. "... 

Modern cell factory engineering allows for the design of new metabolic pathways, expansion of the product portfolio, utilization of new substrates, and engineering of complex cellular features for high productivity and robustness (Figure 18.1). This chapter focuses on recent developments in the application of yeasts in biotechnology. Saytex and NcendX are the cornerstone of Albemarle s portfolio from the late 1990s with a 50,000 tpa expansion for Saytex RB-100 material, demand for which had been increasing at 7-10% a year. A more recent addition has been Saytex CP-2000, a continuous process, and high quality tetrabrominated product and NcendX P30, abisphenol A based phosphate product being targeted at the PC/ABS materials, with a 12,000 tpa unit opened in early 2000. 

Second, the technology portfolio changes over time. For example, soil carbon capture and sequestration are relatively important early on due to their low cost. Over time, their role declines due to both the exhaustion of the activity s potential and the rapid expansion in magnitude of the carbon emission mitigation requirement. 

Our laboratory in cooperation with several national and international academic and industrial partners is contributing to these efforts by the establishment of various dedicated characterization techniques (like activity coefficient measurements using GC technology) as well as determination of thermodynamic and physicochemical properties from a continuously growing portfolio of (functionalized) ionic liquids. Based on the received property data we published several papers related to the adjacent prediction of properties (like molar enthalpy of vaporization, parachor, interstice volume, interstice fractions, thermal expansion coefficient, standard entropy etc.). Additionally our laboratory created and launched a new most comprehensive Ionic Liquid property data base—delph-IL.(www.delphil.net). This fast growing collections of IL data will supvport researchers in the field to find and evaluate potential materials for their applications and hence decrease the time for new developments.
