In this spirit, it is pertinent to recount some of the work done under Arapahoe Chemicals/Syntex, Glaxo, Bristol-Myers, and Schering-Plough auspices, much of which illustrates the influence of competition, patent portfolios, business, new discoveries, safety, the environment, and marketing, some of which shows that compelling opportunities can resurrect chemical transformations previously cast off as unworkable or commercially uninteresting. 

This research was conducted within RAND Infrastructure, Safety, and Environment (ISE), a unit of the RAND Corporation. The mission of ISE is to improve the development, operation, use, and protection of society s essential built and natural assets, and to enhance the related social assets of safety and security of individuals in transit and in their workplaces and communities. The ISE research portfolio encompasses research and analysis on a broad range of policy areas including homeland security, criminal justice, public safety, occupational safety, the environment, energy, natural resources, climate, agriculture, economic development, transportation, information and telecommunications technologies, space exploration, and other aspects of science and technology policy. 

There are three types of safety pharmacology studies conducted in the pharmaceutical industry, 1) single dose core portfolio preclinical safety studies conducted to Good Laboratory Practise (GLP) 2) supplemental studies of compound specific effects after chronic dosing that are conducted when results from the core battery of tests raise concern and 3) frontloading safety studies conducted in the drug discovery function with the aim of designing safety liabilities out of the lead compound series. 

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE Measurement of cardiac function and morphology is a key part of the preclinical evaluation of experimental medicinal compounds. Blood pressure, heart rate, and electrocardiogram evaluation are part of the core portfolio of safety pharmacology studies carried out in conscious telemetry dogs. If results from the core battery of tests raise concern then supplemental studies are conducted to measure endpoints such as left ventricular pressure, pulmonary arterial pressure, heart rate variability, baroreflex, cardiac output, ventricular contractility and vascular resistance. Many studies are still conducted by traditional paper-based methods. CRFs and documents are sent by post (often overnight) to the sponsor site where they are data entered and filed. Today s technology allows for the conduct at multiple sites, with the ability to pool data for interim analyses and integrated safety summaries. The size and complexity of a study should determine which technology should be employed. Most large pharmaceutical companies have a portfolio of study conduct technologies to employ. 

With the support that has been provided since its creation, NCCAM has invested in a broad array of scientific research projects that span the spectrum from basic research, such as interactions between botanical products and conventional drags, to the conduct of clinical trials to study the safety and efficacy of CAM modalities. The NCCAM portfolio also includes support for research training and education grants. In addition, the Center disseminates information through the NCCAM Clearinghouse (info nccam.nih.gov) and the NCCAM website (http //www.nccam.nih.gov). 

The National Cancer Institute oversees a large R D portfolio that further divides research directions. Within the NCI, research is roughly divided into areas of nanodevices and nanomaterials, nanotechnology-enabled therapeutics, diagnosis and biosensors, advanced imaging, and health and safety.
