To make a successful move into biotechnology, chemical companies with a mixed portfolio of businesses, be they large conglomerates or narrower life science companies, need to work out which of their many individual businesses are suitable candidates, determine which ones to select for a broader portfolio, and trace out a route for making the transformation. [Pg.76]

In addition to individual businesses, chemical companies have to consider their biotechnology strategies from the point of view of a portfolio and the synergies it offers. The example of the life science companies shows that biotechnology does not contain synergies right across the board, but there are important ones which conglomerates or Hfe science companies can use as a basis for portfolio selection. [Pg.76]

Although providing only comparative and not absolute values, the methodology of eco-efficiency is very useful for an evaluation of process alternatives. In Chapter 1 (Section 1.6.1), Table 1.10 summarizes the results of a study by EuropaBio to evaluate the contribution of biotechnologies to sustainability. One of the dted examples is the synthesis of vitamin B2, an essential nutrient found in meat, dairy foods, plant foods and corn products and which is required by the body to break down food components, maintain tissue and absorb other nutrients. Using the eco-efficiency and, particularly, the portfolio plot it is possible to further demonstrate the benefits... [Pg.291]

Pharmaceutical coverage is skewed towards the U.S. and Europe, while the biotechnology and drug discovery publications better represent the Asian and the rest of the world markets. Recent pharmaceutical titles include U.S. Alzheimer s Disease Medications Markets, World Emerging Anti-Obesity Prescription Drug Markets, U.S. Parkinson s Disease Therapies Markets, and R D Portfolio Management. [Pg.156]

Initially, P. putida strains were evaluated as degrader for aromatic xenobi-otics in bioremediation processes [38, 128, 129], as plant-growth promoting microorganism [130], as well as biocontrol agent [131]. Today, P putida is regarded as an efficient producer for biotechnological production of a broad portfolio of biopolymers, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals [11]. However, most... [Pg.311]

Modern cell factory engineering allows for the design of new metabolic pathways, expansion of the product portfolio, utilization of new substrates, and engineering of complex cellular features for high productivity and robustness (Figure 18.1). This chapter focuses on recent developments in the application of yeasts in biotechnology. For a more comprehensive treatise of the topic, the reader is referred to recent reviews as those cited here. [Pg.673]
