Polymer combinations

Organosilicon polymers. Silicon resembles carbon in certain respects and attempts have been made to prepare polymers combining carbon and silicon units in the molecule with the object of increasing the heat resistance of polymers. It has been found that the hydrolysis of a dialkyl-dichlorosilicane or an alkyltrichlorosilicane, or a mixture of the two, leads to polymers (Silicones), both solid and liquid, which possess great thermal stability. Thus dimethyldichlorosilicane (I) is rapidly converted by water into the silicol (II), which immediately loses water to give a silicone oil of the type (III) ... [Pg.1020]

Patents have appeared (33,34) which show formulations containing PMMA emulsion polymer and PMMA suspension polymer combined with benzyl butyl phthalate and octyl benzyl phthalate. It is likely that polymers of this type will require highly polar plasticizers in order to have both adequate compatibiHty and adequate gelation. When replacing PVC appHcations the use of large quantities of phosphate plasticizers is sometimes required to give equivalent fire performance. [Pg.129]

A chelant—polymer combination is an effective approach to controlling iron oxide. Adequate chelant is fed to complex hardness and soluble iron, with a slight excess to solubilize iron contamination. Polymers are then added to condition and disperse any remaining iron oxide contamination. [Pg.263]

Phosphate—Chelant—Polymer Combinations. Combinations of polymer, phosphate, and chelant are commonly used to produce results comparable to chelant—polymer treatment in boilers operating at 4137 x 10 Pa or less. Boiler cleanliness is improved over phosphate treatment, and the presence of phosphate provides an easy means of testing to confirm the presence of treatment in the boiler water. [Pg.263]

The polymers combine a high level of flame retardancy with good thermal insulation and sound absorption characteristics. Densities are somewhat high (16-20 kg/m ). [Pg.808]

Silicones are probably best known for their application as sealants and as release materials for pressure sensitive adhesives [107]. The silicone polymer combines an inorganic backbone made from silicon-oxygen bonds with organic substitution on the silicon atom. This repeating unit, shown below is called a siloxane. [Pg.505]

These are all examples of soluble polymers. Combinations of soluble with insoluble polymers have also been reported. Polychloroprene or chlorosulfonated polyethylene was eombined with core-shell polymer particles to give an adhesive with improved cold impact resistance [33]. The fascinating chemistry of chlorosulfonated polyethylene in acrylic adhesives will be further discussed in the section on initiators. In many cases chlorosulfonated polyethylene is chemically attached to the acrylic matrix. [Pg.831]

The advances in polymer blending and alloying technology have occurred through three routes (1) similar-rheology polymer pairs, (2) miscible polymers such as polyphenylene oxide and polystyrene, or (3) interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs). All these systems were limited to specific polymer combinations that have an inherent physical affinity for each other. However with... [Pg.347]

Intensive research on the electrocatalytic properties of polymer-modified electrodes has been going on for many years Until recently, most known coatings were redox polymers. Combining redox polymers with conducting polymers should, in principle, further improve the electrocatalytic activity of such systems, as the conducting polymers are, in addition, electron carriers and reservoirs. One possibility of intercalating electroactive redox centres in the conducting polymer is to incorporate redoxactive anions — which act as dopants — into the polymer. Most research has been done on PPy, doped with inter alia Co 96) RyQ- 297) (--q. and Fe-phthalocyanines 298,299) Co-porphyrines Evidently, in these... [Pg.34]

A method has recently been described for wrapping polymers around metal atoms and very small metal clusters using both matrix and macroscale metal vapor-fluid polymer synthetic techniques. Significant early observations are that (i) the experiments can be entirely conducted at, or close to room temperature, (ii) the resulting "pol5aner stabilized metal cluster combinations are homogeneous liquids which are stable at or near room temperature, and (,iii) the methodology is easily extended to bimetallic and trimetallic polymer combinations. ... [Pg.168]

Random copolymers usually exhibit properties which are intermediate between those of the specihc homopolymers. The fact that graft copolymers contain long sequences of two different monomer units indicates that it should be possible to select polymer combinations to give highly specihc properties which are characteristics of the homopolymers involved. [Pg.867]

Nevertheless, professional industrial hygienists are called upon routinely to select protective clothing that will provide an adequate, if not absolute, level of protection, even when permeation data are not available for a specific chemical/polymer combination. Their task is formidable. It is also a task that can be performed more easily with the assistance of an expert system. [Pg.64]

Electro-optic materials can be made using liquid crystal polymer combinations. In these applications, termed polymer-stabilized liquid crystals [83,86], the hquid crystal is not removed after polymerization of the monomer and the resulting polymer network stabilizes the liquid crystal orientation. [Pg.541]

Table 1 summarizes several of the experimental methods discussed in this chapter. A need exists for new or revised methods for transport experimentation, particularly for therapeutic proteins or peptides in polymeric systems. An important criterion for the new or revised methods includes in situ sampling using micro techniques which simultaneously sample, separate, and analyze the sample. For example, capillary zone electrophoresis provides a micro technique with high separation resolution and the potential to measure the mobilities and diffusion coefficients of the diffusant in the presence of a polymer. Combining the separation and analytical components adds considerable power and versatility to the method. In addition, up-to-date separation instrumentation is computer-driven, so that methods development is optimized, data are acquired according to a predetermined program, and data analysis is facilitated. [Pg.122]

As described above, the most common hydrophilic polymer combined with aliphatic polyesters to prepare polymer micelles is PEG. Although there have been many reports on the polymer micelles of PEG-b-aliphatic polyesters, only few recent examples are introduced in this review. Shin et al. reported the therapeutic potential of PEG-b-PLA micelles entrapping multiple anticancer drugs of poor solubility in... [Pg.82]

The aerosol (visible) fraction is mbber fume as defined by the UK HSE, i.e., the fume evolved in the mixing, milling and blending of natural mbber and mbber or synthetic elastomers, or of natural mbber and synthetic polymers combined with chemicals, and in the processes which convert the resultant blends into finished process dust products or parts thereof, and including any... [Pg.54]

This analysis leads to the conclusion that equation 1 is obeyed well by certain anthracene/polymer combinations, but there are significant deviations for others. DMA/PEMA (poly(ethyl methacrylate)) and DPA/PBMA (poly(butyl methacrylate)) fit equation 1 exactly, while DPA/PEMA (both with and without sensitizer) and DPA/PDPS (poly(diphenylsiloxane)) deviate the actual reaction proceeds more slowly with dose than predicted, and the deviation increases as the dose increases. [Pg.339]

Therefore, the best approach to investigate photoresist swelling is to determine, in-situ, the SCP in a polymer undergoing dissolution. Although Crank (12) proposed a descriptive SCP in 1953, firm experimental data started to appear only recently. Thomas and Kindle s microdensitometry (13-161 and Kramer s Rutherford back-scattering (17-181 produced SCP of several solvent-polymer combinations. However, these efforts were limited by the spatial resolution of their techniques (ca. 30 nm). In addition, these techniques have been applied to systems where the SPR s are on the order of 1 /xm/hour or less. [Pg.386]

Resist systems may be more complicated than just a single polymer in a single solvent. They may be composed of polymer, polymer/dye, or polymer/polymer combinations (where the small molecule dye or additional polymer increases the radiation sensitivity of the resist film) with one or more solvents. The more complicated polymer/dye or polymer/polymer systems have the added possibilities of phase separation or aggregation during the non-equilibrium casting process. Law (16 I investigated the effects of spin casting on a... [Pg.98]

The book consists of four articles reviewing the literature based on the authors own experiences over the last decade in this field. It does not claim to be exhaustive nor to provide complete coverage of the very extensive literature in this field. Instead, it focuses on the currently intense areas of research namely living polymerization, block copolymer synthesis, synthesis of dendrimers and finally macroporous thermosets. Hopefully, this volume will not only serve as a book on the design of macromolecular architectures but also as a source of inspiration to produce polymers combining several functional properties. [Pg.248]

The use of polymer combinations is demonstrated in Figure 7. The addition of about IrngL of a low molecular weight cationic polymer to negatively charged alumina particles at pH 11 destabilises the dispersion but produces only very small floes - around 7 nm (Figure 7a). Further treatment, with about... [Pg.11]
