Polymer wrapping

This molecule is a copolymer with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) in acrylic latex paints, where the hydrophobic PMMA is surrounded by hydrophilic polyvinyl acetate molecules. Such a suspension of a hydrophobic polymer wrapped in a hydrophilic polymer is called a latex.

Noncovalent approaches can usually preserve the structures and properties of carbon nanotubes after functionalization17 (though not necessarily the near-infrared absorption characteristics due to well-established doping effects), thus are equally important to the biocompatibilization and bioapplications of nanotubes.15 Among commonly employed noncovalent schemes are surfactant dispersion,18 tt-tt stacking with aromatic compounds,19 and polymer wrapping.20... 

A different approach to noncovalent fnnctionalization, which is applied excln-sively to CNTs, is polymer wrapping [30,31b,49,52,53], In this approach CNTs can be wrapped with polymers with different properties by van der Waals or by K-K interactions. These polymers can also be used as anchors for metal complexes by covalent bonding or by electrostatic interactions. 

The polyanion immobilized by noncovalent interactions onto SWCNTs (SWCNT-PSS ) was then able to anchor the octapyridiumporphyrin salt by strong electrostatic interactions. Admittedly, covalent functionalization may strongly affect the extended 7t-system, dramatically changing the electronic properties of SWCNTs. Therefore, in order to maintain the contact between the dcmor and the acceptor and, at the same time, to preserve the electronic structure of SWCNTs, polymer wrapping cmistitutes an eligible alternative.
