Quenched sheet is pulled horizontally from the stack and is then either wound on roUs or sheared into sheets of the required dimension. Among the polymers made into sheet this way are the polyolefins, poly(vinyl chloride), amorphous polyester, polycarbonate, and polyarjiate. [Pg.379]

In 1954 the surface fluorination of polyethylene sheets by using a soHd CO2 cooled heat sink was patented (44). Later patents covered the fluorination of PVC (45) and polyethylene bottles (46). Studies of surface fluorination of polymer films have been reported (47). The fluorination of polyethylene powder was described (48) as a fiery intense reaction, which was finally controlled by dilution with an inert gas at reduced pressures. Direct fluorination of polymers was achieved in 1970 (8,49). More recently, surface fluorinations of poly(vinyl fluoride), polycarbonates, polystyrene, and poly(methyl methacrylate), and the surface fluorination of containers have been described (50,51). Partially fluorinated poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polyamides such as nylon have excellent soil release properties as well as high wettabiUty (52,53). The most advanced direct fluorination technology in the area of single-compound synthesis and synthesis of high performance fluids is currently practiced by 3M Co. of St. Paul, Minnesota, and by Exfluor Research Corp. of Austin, Texas. [Pg.278]

Examples of photothermoplasts include polyacrylates, polyacrylamides, polystyrenes, polycarbonates, and their copolymers (169). An especially well-re searched photothermoplast is poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), which is blended with methyl methacrylate (MMA) or styrene as a monomer, and titanium-bis(cyclopentadienyl) as a photoinitiator (170). [Pg.154]

Other Polymers. Besides polycarbonates, poly(methyl methacrylate)s, cycfic polyolefins, and uv-curable cross-linked polymers, a host of other polymers have been examined for their suitabiUty as substrate materials for optical data storage, preferably compact disks, in the last years. These polymers have not gained commercial importance polystyrene (PS), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), cellulose acetobutyrate (CAB), bis(diallylpolycarbonate) (BDPC), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), styrene—acrylonitrile copolymers (SAN), poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAC), and for substrates with high resistance to heat softening, polysulfones (PSU) and polyimides (PI). [Pg.162]

Of practical interest are detailed studies to influence the magnetooptical properties of RE-TM materials by the substrate material and the substrate adhesion of RE-TM layers by the selected deposition technique (226). AppHcation of an adhesion-promoting paint before metal spraying improves the coating. Color-coded paints, which indicate compatibiHty with specific plastics, can be appHed at 20 times the rate of grit blasting, typically at 0.025-mm dry film thickness. The main test and control method is cross-hatch adhesion. Acrylic ESTER POLYMERS Acrylonitrile POLYMERS Cellulose esters). Automotive appHcations account for about 116,000 t of woddwide consumption aimuaHy, with appHcations for various components including headlamp assembHes, interior instmment panels, bumpers, etc. Many automotive appHcations use blends of polycarbonate with acrylonitrile—butadiene—styrene (ABS) or with poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) (see Acrylonitrile polymers). Both large and smaH appHances also account for large markets for polycarbonate. Consumption is about 54,000 t aimuaHy. During the eady development of polycarbonates, many bisphenols were investigated for potential useftil products. Some of these monomers and polymers are hsted in Table 3. Despite this intensive search, however, no homopolycarbonates other than that of BPA have been produced. Copolymers and blends, on the other hand, have been quite successhil. Blends of polycarbonate with ABS and with poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT in particular have shown significant growth since the mid-1980s. [Pg.286]

Noncrystalline aromatic polycarbonates (qv) and polyesters (polyarylates) and alloys of polycarbonate with other thermoplastics are considered elsewhere, as are aHphatic polyesters derived from natural or biological sources such as poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), poly(glycoHde), or poly(lactide) these, too, are separately covered (see Polymers, environmentally degradable Sutures). Specific polymers are dealt with largely in order of volume, which puts PET first by virtue of its enormous market volume in bottie resin. [Pg.292]

Blends with good mechanical properties can be made from DMPPO and polymers with which DMPPO is incompatible if an appropriate additive, compatibilizing agent, or treatment is used to increase the dispersion of the two phases. Polymerization by Transimidization Reaction. Exchange polymerization via equihbrium reactions is commonly practiced for the preparation of polyesters and polycarbonates. The two-step transimidization polymerization of polyimides was described in an early patent (65). The reaction of pyromellitic diimide with diamines in dipolar solvents resulted in poly(amic amide)s that were thermally converted to the polyimides. Blends of the polysulfone tesia have been made with ABS, poly(ethylene terephthalate), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and polycarbonate. These ate sold by Amoco under the Miadel trademark.
