Poly(vinyhdene chloride) (PVDC) film has exceUent barrier properties, among the best of the common films (see Barrier polymers). It is formulated and processed into a flexible film with cling and tacky properties that make it a useful wrap for leftovers and other household uses. As a component in coatings or laminates it provides barrier properties to other film stmctures. The vinyUdene chloride is copolymerized with vinyl chloride, alkyl acrylates, and acrylonitrile to get the optimum processibUity and end use properties (see Vinylidene chloride monomer and polymers). [Pg.378]

Polyester. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) [25038-59-9] (PET) polyester film has intermediate gas- and water- vapor barrier properties, very high tensile and impact strengths, and high temperature resistance (see Polyesters, thermoplastic). AppHcations include use as an outer web in laminations to protect aluminum foil. It is coated with PVDC to function as the flat or sealing web for vacuum/gas flush packaged processed meat, cheese, or fresh pasta. [Pg.452]

Thermoform able sheet may be mono- or multilayer with the latter produced by lamination or coextmsion. Multilayers are employed to incorporate high oxygen-barrier materials between stmctural or high water-vapor barrier plastics. Both ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers and poly(vinyhdene chloride) (less often) are used as high oxygen-barrier interior layers with polystyrene or polypropylene as the stmctural layers, and polyolefin on the exterior for sealing. [Pg.454]

Alkenylsuccinic anhydrides made from several linear alpha olefins are used in paper sizing, detergents, and other uses. Sulfosuccinic acid esters serve as surface active agents. Alkyd resins (qv) are used as surface coatings. Chlorendric anhydride [115-27-5] is used as a flame resistant component (see Flame retardants). Tetrahydrophthalic acid [88-98-2] and hexahydrophthalic anhydride [85-42-7] have specialty resin appHcations. Gas barrier films made by grafting maleic anhydride to polypropylene [25085-53-4] film are used in food packaging (qv). Poly(maleic anhydride) [24937-72-2] is used as a scale preventer and corrosion inhibitor (see Corrosion and corrosion control). Maleic anhydride forms copolymers with ethylene glycol methyl vinyl ethers which are partially esterified for biomedical and pharmaceutical uses (189) (see Pharmaceuticals). [Pg.461]

Figure 4c also describes the spontaneous polymerisation ofpara- s.yX en.e diradicals on the surface of soHd particles dispersed in a gas phase that contains this reactive monomer (16) (see XylylenePOLYMERS). The poly -xylylene) polymer produced forms a continuous capsule sheU that is highly impermeable to transport of many penetrants including water. This is an expensive encapsulation process, but it has produced capsules with impressive barrier properties. The web materials used to form dmms and cans can be customized to each packaging apphcation. The materials are selected based on the package properties of moisture and humidity resistance, nonstick resistance, or barrier properties required. The adhesives used to bond the phes together include sihcates, poly(vinyl alcohol), and poly(vinyl acetate) (10). Sihcate adhesives are most commonly used in the manufacture of dmm packages. [Pg.519]

Vinylidene Chloride Copolymer Latex. Vinyhdene chloride polymers are often made in emulsion, but usuaUy are isolated, dried, and used as conventional resins. Stable latices have been prepared and can be used direcdy for coatings (171—176). The principal apphcations for these materials are as barrier coatings on paper products and, more recently, on plastic films. The heat-seal characteristics of VDC copolymer coatings are equaUy valuable in many apphcations. They are also used as binders for paints and nonwoven fabrics (177). The use of special VDC copolymer latices for barrier laminating adhesives is growing, and the use of vinyhdene chloride copolymers in flame-resistant carpet backing is weU known (178—181). VDC latices can also be used to coat poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) bottles to retain carbon dioxide (182). [Pg.442]

The excellent chemical resistance and physical properties of PVA resins have resulted in broad industrial use. The polymer is an excellent adhesive and possesses solvent-, oil-, and grease-resistant properties matched by few other polymers. Poly(vinyl alcohol) films exhibit high tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and oxygen barrier properties which, under dry conditions, are superior to those of any other known polymer. The polymer s low surface tension provides for excellent emulsification and protective coUoid properties. [Pg.475]

Poly(vinyl alcohol) is an innocuous material having unlimited storage stabiUty. It is most commonly suppHed in 20-kg, 22.7-kg (50-lb), and 25-kg bags equipped with a moisture barrier to prevent caking. PVA is also available in bulk or in super sacks. The FDA regulations governing the use of PVA are shown in Table 8. Poly(vinyl alcohol) maintains an exemption for tolerance from the EPA. [Pg.486]

Barrier Layers. Depending on composition, barrier layers can function simply as spatial separators or they can provide specified time delays by swelling at controlled rates or undergoing reactions such as hydrolysis or dissolution. Suitable barrier materials include cellulose esters and water-permeable polymers such as gelatin and poly(vinyl alcohol) (see Barrier polymers). [Pg.496]

Poly(ethylene-i (9-vinyl alcohol) is made by saponification of ethylene—vinyl acetate copolymers. The properties of these materials depend on the amount of vinyl alcohol present in the copolymer. High vinyl alcohol content results in more hydrophilic materials possessing higher densities, stiffness, and moduh. They are used commercially as barrier resins for packaging. A fuel cell is an electrochemical reactor with an anodic compartment for the fuel oxidation giving a proton and a cathodic compartment for the reaction of the proton with oxygen. Two scientific problems must be solved finding a low-cost efficient catalyst and finding a membrane for the separation of anodic and cathodic compartments. The membrane is a poly electrolyte allowing the transfer of hydrated proton but being barrier for the gases. [Pg.272]
