Selection and evaluation of materials can be very complex. The following series of questions is based on material from San Diego Plastics website. It shows the wide variety of considerations one must take when selecting a plastic material for an application. 

Honeywell Engineered Applications Solutions is a Honeywell business enterprise that teams Engineering Plastics, Specialty Films and Metal Injection Molding technologies to provide a source for engineered solutions. Honeywell s EAS website supplies a range of technical services and solutions information helpful to the plastics designer. 

Rapra have published their own chemical resistance data sheets [9, 10], based on results of tests at Rapra performed by a small team of operators. They are thus comparable one with another and their sources are known. Rapra s Plascams materials selection database provides durability properties on a ranking basis and their Plastics Design Guide includes Plascams and other useful programmes. In 2002 Rapra and Faraday Plastics have launched a new website of environmental stress cracking data (www.esc-plastics.com). 

The CAMPUS Plastics Database, covering some 40 manufacturers grades of materials, provides data to a standard format in accordance with ISO 10350 [11] and ISO 11403 [12]. It is available from participating manufacturers and through www.campusplastics.com. Singlepoint properties listed include creep modulus after 1 h and 1,000 h and thermal expansion. Multi-point data listed include creep modulus at five temperatures. The CAMPUS website provides addresses and telephone numbers from which data to the agreed format may be obtained, and links to some manufacturers websites directly.

The second method is a similar procedure the cap of the product s container (plastic, glass or can) is punctured with a needle. Carbon dioxide is expelled from solution by vigorous shaking, and the headspace pressure is recorded. From the pressure rise, the volume of carbon dioxide dissolved in the product can be determined. This method is probably one of the most commonly used procedures for measuring carbonation however, the exact method used varies from one manufacturer to another. One supplier of this type of carbonation tester is Stevenson Reeves of Edinburgh, which also sells a slide rule to convert pressure rise measurements into carbonation levels. To help in quickly evaluating what machinery is available worldwide that will meet your requirements Plastics Technology publications has set up an online website (www.plasticstechnology.com). This action follows their annual Processing Handbook and Buyers Guide that has been published for many decades. 

The Society of Plastics Industry, Inc. has created a website (http //www.pfoa-facts.com) as a resource for information and for addressing any questions about PFOA and the products made with it. 

General information about how to determine specific migration is available in CEN document EN 13130-1 2004 Materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs - Plastics substances subject to limitation - Part 1 Guide to test methods for the specific migration of substances from plastics to foods and food simulants and the determination of substances in plastics and the selection of conditions of exposure to food simulants . CEN has also established methods for the determination of some specific migration. Table 5.4 is a list of components for which CEN methods are established. Another source of methods for the determination of specific migration can be found at http // cpf.jrc.it/smt/. At this website of the Joint Research Centre methods are collected and made public online. A summary of the methods available at the website of JRC is given in Table 5.5.

The relevance of the historical development of plastics to conservation professionals is largely as a tool to date or help identify the types of materials or technologies represented in collections. Conservators and historians are also interested in the reasons and background to the development of plastics. A brief history of the development of plastics is presented in this chapter. More detailed information may be obtained from publications and the website of the Plastics Historical Society (Plastics Historical Society, 2006 Mossman, 1997). 

Artists and conservators would benefit from a searchable, reliable source of material information presented in a way that was understandable to non-chemists. Such a database would serve as a materials advisory service. Plasticsnetwork.org is a website which resulted from an international collaborative project to promote an understanding of plastics and design and was coordinated by the Arts Institute at Bournemouth, UK (plasticsnetwork.org, 2005). It includes information about the history of plastics, manufacture, general properties and design applications from plastics historians, designers, plastics manufacturers and the British Plastics Federation, the professional body for the plastics industry in the UK It does not include details of physical and chemical properties of polymer types, so cannot be used to select specific commercial products material s,...
