Plastics floating

The density of a ceramic or metal powder is determined with the help of a so-called pycnometer. The density of a piece of ceramic or metal material can be determined by measuring its mass and volume in order to obtain the volume, the object is immersed in a liquid. For plastics a number of liquids with known densities are used and you determine whether a plastic floats, sinks or is suspended in a certain fluid. This will tell you that its density is less than, more than or equal to that of the liquid respectively. [Pg.154]

The variation of the bed voidage in a gas fluidized bed was used by Colver (1981, 1996) and Donahoe and Colver 1984 to track single injected air bubbles, fast moving waves, a rising plastic float, and falling objects for both ac and dc electric fields. The rise velocity of the bubble slows from about 25 cm/s to 10.5 cm/sec near a the surface of the bed. A fast compression wave moving at about 270 cm/s was detected just ahead of the bubble. [Pg.89]

Examples of cross-border transport are also very numerous. From North America to Europe, via the Gulf Stream, from the Chaimel toward the North Sea and from the North Sea to the Kattlegat at the entrance of the Baltic Sea, beaches accumulate plastics. In the Mediterranean, plastic floats from the coast of France to the south to Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Italy or from the coast of Egypt to the Aegean Sea through Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Tmkey. Interaction of Solids With Flotation Reagents. In the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic, polyethylene and polypropylene pellets were observed at concentrations of 1333-3600 pellets km (48). Since this area is far from any major shipping lane and is dominated oceanographically by the Antarctic West-Wind Drift with possibly some input from the Brazil Current, the source of the floating plastic was thought to be ships transporting the raw material in the South Atlantic (48). The particles consist of a bead with an exterior surface that is at least partially coated with a material capable of accelerating the oxidation of organic compounds floating on water, under illumination, and in the presence of air. The sample water container should be made of appropriate materials to avoid adsorption of the chemical of interest on the vessel surfaces. In most cases, a glass bottle may be better than a plastic bottle. The bottle is washed with an organic solvent in advance and also washed with sample water just before sampling. To exploit the numerous applications for floating catalyst VGCF in engineered plastics, production rates are projected to be on the order of several pounds per hour from a single tube reactor. Demonstration experiments on a small scale have shown feasibility of accomplishing the desired rate of production. Economic production of such quantities will involve recapture of energy in the heated unreacted gas which exits the reactor, as well as automated collection, debulking, and preform fabrication systems. [Pg.182]
