Geomembrane These liners chiefly provide impermeable barriers. They can be characterized as (1) solid waste containment hazardous landfill, landfill capping, and sanitary landfill (2) liquid containment canal, chemical/brine pond, earthen dam, fish farm, river/coastal bank, waste-water, and recreation (3) mining, leach pad and tailing ponds and (4) specialties floating reservoir caps, secondary containment, tunnel, erosion, vapor barrier, and water purification. Plastics used include medium to very low density PE, PVC, and chlorosulfonated PE (CSPE). (The Romans used in their land and road constructions what we call geomembrane.)...

Cyanide hazards to fish, wildlife, and livestock are well documented. Massive kills of freshwater fish by accidental discharges of cyanide wastes are fairly common (Holden and Marsden 1964 Leduc 1978 Towill et al. 1978 USEPA 1980 Albersworth et al. 1989 Ripley et al. 1996). In one case, cyanide-containing mine effluents from a Canadian tailings pond released into a nearby creek...

The background of this study is the investigation at the site Bielatal (see Daus et al. this volume). The arsenic concentrations in the seepage water of this tailings pond are high (up to 4 mg/1) and natural arsenic precipitation processes are incomplete. The neutral pH, the presence of both arsenite and arsenate (sum 1 mg/L), and the oxygen saturation of the water are the boundary conditions of the described experiments.

Solid samples of tailings material were collected from different depths (2 - 18 m) in drill cores. Precipitates were collected from different locations in the stream bed. Water samples were taken from a well situated in the tailings pond, at three different effluent points on the downstream face of the tailings dam, and also at 30 m as well as 50 m downstream. The physico-chemical parameters of the water were measured during sampling.
