Plasticizers 2-pyrrolidone

Occasionally, water-soluble plastics are required. Poly(vinyl alcohol) is commonly the first to be considered but some cellulose ethers, polyethylene oxides, poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) and A-substituted polyamides are among many possible alternatives. [Pg.897]

Radiation Induced Reactions. Graft polymers have been prepared from poly(vinyl alcohol) by the irradiation of the polymer-monomer system and some other methods. The grafted side chains reported include acrylamide, acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, ethyl acrylate, ethylene, ethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinyl pyridine and vinyl pyrrolidone (13). Poly(vinyl alcohols) with grafted methyl methacrylate and sometimes methyl acrylate have been studied as membranes for hemodialysis (14). Graft polymers consisting of 50% poly(vinyl alcohol), 25% poly(vinyl acetate) and 25% grafted ethylene oxide units can be used to prepare capsule cases for drugs which do not require any additional plasticizers (15). [Pg.84]

PolyQ>phenylene sulfide) (PPS) deserves much attention as an engineering and a conductive plastic and in some cases as a specialty polymer with excellent performance. Lenz first reported that PPS is synthesized by the polycondensation of / -halothiophenolate alkali-metal salts at high temperature [83], Commercially PPS is produced by the polycondensation of -dichlorobenzene and sodium sulfide in A-methyl-2-pyrrolidone [84]. These polymerizations proceed only at high temperature and pressure, and it is difficult to remove the metal halides such as sodium chloride as by-products in order to obtain pure PPS salt contamination degrades the electric performance and moldability. [Pg.547]

Poly(phenylene sulfide) n. Poly(phenylene sulfide), or PPS, is a high-performance plastic that is very strong and can resist very high temperatures up to 300° C. To produce PPS you have to react paradi-chlorobenzene and sodium sulfide in a polar solvent like iV-methyl pyrrolidone See image). [Pg.762]

Polyfl -vinylpyrrolidone) [PVP, poly(A/-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)] n, A highly water-soluble polymer prepared by the addition polymerization of 1 -vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (for structure). Molecular weights range from 10,000 to 360,000. Solutions of the polymer are used as protective colloids and emulsion stabilizers, and it has been used as a substitute for human blood plasma. PVP films are clear and hard, but can be plasticized. [Pg.774]
