Many-body problems wnth RT potentials are notoriously difficult. It is well known that the Coulomb potential falls off so slowly with distance that mathematical difficulties can arise. The 4-k dependence of the integration volume element, combined with the RT dependence of the potential, produce ill-defined interaction integrals unless attractive and repulsive mteractions are properly combined. The classical or quantum treatment of ionic melts [17], many-body gravitational dynamics [18] and Madelung sums [19] for ionic crystals are all plagued by such difficulties. [Pg.2159]

Sulfur has long been known for its properties as a pesticide and a curative agent. Homer spoke of the pest-averting sulfur as far back as 800—1000 BC, Hippocrates (400 Bc) considered sulfur sa an antidote against plague, and Dioscorides (100 ad) used sulfur ointment in dermatology (244). In 1803, the use of a lime—sulfur protective treatment for fmit trees was reported, and in 1850 sulfur dust was used to protect foHage (245). For many years, physicians have been plagued by a paucity of available treatments for patients with acute ischemic stroke. The therapies we had to offer were either potentially quite hazardous, sometimes leading to poor outcomes, or so benign as to seem to offer little benefit. A final note must be made about a common problem that has plagued many kinetic treatments of reactive intermediate chemistry at low temperatures. Most observations of QMT in reactive intermediates have been in solid matrices at cryogenic temperatures. Routinely, reactive intermediates are prepared for spectroscopy by photolyses of precursors imbedded in glassy organic or noble gas (or N2) solids. The low temperatures and inert surroundings generally inhibit inter- and intramolecular reactions sufficiently to allow spectroscopic measurements on conventional and convenient timescales. Clinical Diagnosis A presumptive diagnosis can be made from by Gram or Wayson stain of lymph node aspirates, sputum, or cerebrospinal fluid. Plague can also be cultured. As for treatment, early administration of antibiotics is very effective. Supportive therapy for pneumonic and septicemic forms is required. [Pg.152]

Decontamination Soap and water, or diluted sodium hypochlorite solution (0.5 percent). Removal of potentially contaminated clothing should be done by people in full protective clothing in an area away from non-contaminated persons. For victims with bubonic plague, drainage, and secretion procedures need to be employed. Careful treatment of buboes is required to avoid aerosolizing infectious material. For victims with pneumonic plague, strict isolation is absolutely necessary. Heat, disinfectants and sunlight renders bacteria harmless. [Pg.153]

With pneumonic plague, the first signs of illness are fever, headache, weakness, and rapidly developing pneumonia with shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and sometimes bloody or watery sputum. The pneumonia progresses for 2 to 4 days and may cause respiratory failure and shock. Without early treatment, patients may die. [Pg.395]

Early treatment of pneumonic plague is essential. To reduce the chance of death, antibiotics must be given within 24 hours of first symptoms. Streptomycin, gentamicin, the tetracyclines, and chloramphenicol are all effective against pneumonic plague. [Pg.395]

The presence of sodium urate in the amorphous deposits in a jug found in 1903, but dating back to the Middle Ages, suggests that it was used to store urine, from which the urate precipitated as the urine evaporated.
