The word pepper comes from the Indian Sanskrit word pippali, which became the Greek peperi and Latin piper. Piper nigrum is native to southwest India and Sri Lanka, where it has a long history of traditional use. Pepper was traded as a spice and used as a medicinal substance for at least 4,000 years. It was first cultivated in the present Indian state of Kerala, which is located at the southern tip of India along its southwest coast. Pepper was freely traded between [Pg.221]

Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and northern Africa centuries before it was used by ancient Greeks and Romans. In ancient times, it was used as a spice, preservative, and medicine. Pepper was such a valuable commodity that it was often used as a medium of exchange and as a form of money. Centers of commerce such as Alexandria, Constantinople (Istanbul), Calicut, and Venice arose from the trade of pepper. Arab monopolies for pepper (and other spices) kept prices high, making pepper a spice for the wealthy. To break the Arab monopolies, European powers explored for direct trade routes to India. Portugal built on Vasco da Gama s (1469-1524) trade route completed in 1488 to India to establish its own pepper monopoly in the 16th century. This in turn prompted Spain to search for western routes to India. [Pg.222]

The interactions between the endocrine and neural systems of the GIT are complex, include shared signaling molecules, and can be hard to separate. Therefore, it is likely that the influence(s) of some phytochemicals will cross over between neural and non-neural pathways. The chemistry of pepper has long been studied and the pungent principle of black pepper—a piperidine alkaloid, piperine 134—was isolated as early as 1877 (201). Its synthesis from the acid and piperidine was accomplished in 1882. (202).
