The effect of stimulants on child behavior was first reported in 1937. Charles Bradley, a physician working with children of normal intelligence who had neurological and behavioral disorders, prescribed Benzedrine to treat headaches in children who had undergone a spinal tap. Although the headaches did not disappear with the amphetamines, the children s level of activity decreased tremendously and their academic performance and compliance increased. [Pg.12]

Another prer uisite to successful collaboration is preventing status differentials between profusions (e.g., physicians working with counselors), including differential authority and access to resources, from impeding interdisciplinary collaboration. Sometimes, interdisciplinary efforts generate questions concerning the respective competencies of individual professions. Through open and honest communication such potentially problematic issues can be raised and addressed, early and effectively. [Pg.109]

The occupational physician for a project should be identified and, for HAZWOPER jobs, is required to be board certified in occupational medicine [4]. For any job that involves exposure to hazardous substances, it is important that you locate and use an occupational physician (sometimes referred to in the field as an Oc Doc) who is knowledgeable about the hazards that your workers are exposed to. Sometimes in medicine, as in many other fields, working with a physician who specializes in the hazard that your company deals with can be a lifesaver. [Pg.37]

William Howard Stein fl 911-1980) was born in New York City and received his Ph.D. in 1938 from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He immediately joined the faculty of the Rockefeller Institute, where he remained until his death. In 1972, he shared the Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work with Stanford Moore on developing methods of amino acid analysis and for determining the structure of ribonuclease. [Pg.1030]

Yes. Vaccinia vaccine is recommended for laboratory workers who directly handle cultures, animals contaminated or infected with, nonhighly attenuated vaccinia virus, recombinant vaccinia viruses derived from nonhighly attenuated vaccinia strains, or other orthopoxviruses that infect humans. These would include monkeypox, cowpox, vaccinia, and variola. Other health-care workers, such as physicians and nurses whose contact with nonhighly attenuated vaccinia viruses is limited to contaminated materials such as medical dressings but who adhere to appropriate infection control measures, are at lower risk for accidental infection than laboratory workers. However, because a theoretical risk for infection exists, vaccination can be offered to this group. Vaccination is not recommended for people who do not directly handle nonhighly attenuated virus cultures or materials or who do not work with animals contaminated or infected with these viruses. [Pg.356]

A career in nuclear medicine. Dr. Goulenchyn notes, requires excellence in computers, science, and people skills, with a strong background in physiology. It also offers an unusual benefit for a physician regular working hours. She appreciates the time this provides for her family, as well as for her work with the Canadian Association of Nuclear Medicine, for which she served as president from 1996 to 1998. [Pg.129]

Most (if not all) companies within the pharmaceutical industry have recognised that such requirements are now a permanent part of doing business, and are developing internal health economics expertise, both on a global (corporate) and on a country-specific level. It should be noted that because of the multidisciplinary nature of this area of research, pharmaceutical company-based health economists cannot operate in isolation from the other disciplines within the company. It is therefore vital that pharmaceutical physicians understand the basic principles of health economic evaluations in order to work with the health economists in the development of high-quality analyses. [Pg.701]

The results of genetic tests can have an emotional and medical impact on a whole family. Physicians and genetic counselors work with the patient and the entire family to make sure the medical and social significance of the results is understood. As more genetic tests are developed and methods are established to reduce the inherited risk, the issue will have to be addressed, or people will avoid tests that might allow treatments to lengthen or improve their lives. [Pg.138]

In 1702 Louis Ldrnery published his famous "Treatise on Foods. For thirty-three years he served as physician at the chief hospital (l Hotel Dieu), where he always attracted a large number of medical students (194). Since he worked with extreme facility and since his knowledge, his office, and his laboratory were everywhere, he was able to write some of his memoirs at the chateau of his royal patient, the Princess of Conti, who provided him a quiet retreat for his scientific research (194). [Pg.38]

Once you have your objectives in mind, you must analyze the population of your physical chemistry class in order to plan the accomplishment of your objectives. Most of your students will not become physical chemists. In a career of four decades, 1 worked with hundreds of physical chemistry students. Among these former students, 1 can now identify only a handful of professors of physical chemistry. There are several professors who teach other chemical subjects and a few high-school teachers. Those who work in industry work mostly with organic, analytical, or polymer chemistry. The largest group of my former physical chemistry students is made up of physicians and other health care workers. [Pg.30]

If you have been poisoned by an arsenic or mercury compound, or byacyanide, immediately see a physician. The precautions to be taken when working with other poisonous substances are indicated in the relevant sections of the book. [Pg.19]

Brief History. A physical therapist working with a college football team was taping a team member s ankle when he noticed redness and inflammation between the athlete s toes. The athlete reported that the redness and itching had developed within the last few days and was becoming progressively worse. The therapist suspected a cutaneous fungal infection (probably tinea pedis) and reported this information to the team physician. [Pg.560]

In California, mixer-loaders and spray applicators who work with toxicity category I and II organophosphates or N-methyl carbamates more than 30 hours per 30-day period are required to have medical supervision. Supervision consists of an interview and a medical examination to determine if a medical condition exists which would make the worker unusually susceptible to poisoning due to cholinesterase inhibition, and to caution the individual about the use of certain drugs such as the pheno-thiazine tranquilizers vdtich potentiate the effects of cholinesterase (ChE) inhibition. Two blood samples, taken several days apart, are analyzed to determine the individual s preexposure plasma and red blood cell (RBC) ChE activity (baseline value). The physician arranges a routine ChE testing program and provides for extra ChE tests should the worker be accidently exposed to OP s. If ChE activity is depressed to 50 percent of the baseline value, the physician may ask the employer to place the worker on... [Pg.41]

Pharmacist We have a service called the Med Check Program that does a comprehensive review of all your medications. The pharmacist can work with you and your physicians to address any problems she finds with your medications. Patients will receive a comprehensive review of all their medications, with a written report and patient education about each of their drug-related problems. A pharmacist will work with the patients and their physicians to develop a plan to address these problems. [Pg.376]
