Social Significance

A supper very much appreciated by the members was consumed. It was followed by a very pleasant gathering, which continued all Monday and part of Tuesday, upon which the members, singing and in a happy and merry mood, left the refreshing place.  

But Samfundet also combined the academic tradition of gatherings with a similar culture which was very strong at KTH, where entertainment and drinking was an important part of the internal life of TF. In Holmberger (1912) we can easily find many examples of how social gatherings in TF were arranged and what form they took - and the similarities with the academics is obvious. 

Samfundet continued a long tradition of social gatherings and festivities and, since it had such small external power, it was especially important as a uniting link between the members. It shared this situation with the organizations at the university, and the only one of the organizations here mentioned which had some kind of external power was TF, and that was thanks to its connections to KTH.

The results of genetic tests can have an emotional and medical impact on a whole family. Physicians and genetic counselors work with the patient and the entire family to make sure the medical and social significance of the results is understood. As more genetic tests are developed and methods are established to reduce the inherited risk, the issue will have to be addressed, or people will avoid tests that might allow treatments to lengthen or improve their lives. 

The development of a practical ammonia synthesis process in the early years of the twentieth century was a profound scientific achievement of great social significance in view of the subsequent dependence of the world on fertilizer for support of its growing population.

Thus, although the schemes presented in the sequel are mathematical objects and will be proved with respect to formal definitions, a short excursion into the legal and social significance of signatures seems worthwhile. 

Nicotine is medically and socially significant because of its presence in tobacco, its toxicity, and its propensity to cause dependence in its users. The chronic effects of nicotine and the untoward effects of the chronic use of tobacco are considered in Chapter 23. Nicotine is one of the few natural liquid alkaloids. It is a colorless, volatile base (pK = 8.5) that turns brown and acquires the odor of tobacco on exposure to air. 

Summing up, today a student design project should be directed primarily to the development of creative skills, but without scarifying the reliability of the engineering solution. The project should focus not only on technical performance and economic efficiency, but also on issues of social significance, as sustainability and environment protection.
