Phenol, properties

Pyrazoles, isoxazoles and isothiazoles with a hydroxyl group in the 3-position (491 Z = NR, O, S) could isomerize to 3-azolinones (492). However, these compounds behave as true hydroxy derivatives and show phenolic properties. They give an intense violet color with iron(III) chloride and form a salt (493) with sodium hydroxide which can be O-alkylated by alkyl halides (to give 494 R = alkyl) and acylated by acid chlorides (to give 494 R = acyl). [Pg.100]

Hydroxy pyridine 1-oxides are also tautomeric the 4-isomer exists in about equal amounts of forms (783) and (784). 4-Hydroxy-pyrones and -pyridones exhibit a different type of tautomerism the a-one (e.g. 785) structure is favored relative to the y-one structure. (3-Hydroxy-4-pyrones such as kojic acid (786) show phenolic properties (CHEC 3.28, Scheme 30). a- and 3-Hydroxy cations (e.g. 787) are the conjugate acids of pyridones and pyrones and are considered in the next section. [Pg.272]

Dihvdroxyselenazole crystallises in centimetre-long prisms, M.pt. 1475 C., readily soluble in alcohol, moderately soluble in water forming supersaturated solutions. It sublimes at 100° C., and is feebly acid towards litmus, showing some phenolic properties. It does not form salts with acids. [Pg.118]

Arsaphenol shows strong phenolic properties 25>. It is more acidic than phenol. Unlike 4-hydroxypyridine, no significant amount of the keto tautomer 95 has been detected. [Pg.150]

The leueo-compounds, however, possess decided phenolic properties. They are soluble in alkalies, but oxidise extremely... [Pg.151]

Few hydroxythienopyridines have been described. A major point of interest is the extent to which the compounds exist as the hydroxy or keto tautomer. Derivatives in which the group is attached to the pyridine ring would be expected to resemble their quinoline or isoquinoline analogs, but, in view of the fact that hydroxythiophenes exist to some extent in keto forms, the genuinely phenolic properties of hydroxy groups on the benzene rings of the isosteric systems might not be reproduced in thienopyridines. 1-Hydroxyisoquinoline and 2- and 4-hydroxy-quinoline exist almost exclusively in the keto forms, whereas 3-hydroxyquinoline and 4-hydroxyisoquinoline are extensively enolized in 3-hydroxyisoquinoline the two forms are of comparable stability and which one predominates is dependent on the solvent. A similar pattern is... [Pg.102]

Pyrocusparine contains no methoxyl group and shows crypto-phenolic properties although insoluble in aqueous alkali it readily dissolves in alcoholic potassium hydroxide (42). Zinc dust distillation of cusparine produces pyridine (39). On fusion with caustic potash, proto-catechuic add is formed (38, 39, 35). [Pg.84]
