Permanent paper label

Pressure-sensitive adhesives based on acrylic polymers grew 3.5-fold in the last dozen years. The acrylics are mostly emulsions and solutions, plus small quantities of radiation-curable systems. In tapes, acrylic adhesives are applied mainly to non-paper substrates such as polypropylene, acetate, cellophane, and polyester. In labels, acrylics are used for making permanent paper labels and plastic labels. [Pg.23]

Self-Adhesive or Pressure-Sensitive Labels. It is preferable to call these pressure-sensitive labels, as both the pregummed and heat-sensitive labels are self-adhesive (i.e., the adhesive is already there). They consist of a suitable label facing material (usually paper or polymer), the reverse side of which is coated with a permanently tacky adhesive that is in contact with a backing paper (occasionally plastic) that protects it prior to use. The backing paper is coated with a special release coating that permits the label to be removed easily. Pressure-sensitive adhesives are the essential components of adhesive tapes and labels. They are polymers with permanent tack, usually applied on substrates (plastic/metal films, siliconized papers). To enhance their tack, compounds with high inherent tack are added, for example, resins, plasticizers. These organic solvent-based adhesives are very easy to apply and find wide application in general industry. Peel-and-stick labels provide a quick and easy way to apply labels to almost any surface. Die cut and supplied on release papers, they can be printed in computers for addresses, while preprinted labels for an enormous range of applications, particularly difficult substrates such as polyolefins or cold, moist containers make labeling a pleasure compared with traditional wet-applied systems such as dextrines or caseins. Table 13 gives an example which might be considered as a permanent label adhesive. The substrate in this example is Lusterkote label stock. The paper tear observed during the 180 peel test is an indication of the permanency one could expect from the formulation. The label is an important part of the pharmaceutical product. The most common label used within the European pharmacy is the self-adhesive label. This consists of a laminate of two special types of paper the carrier material and the label paper. The carrier material consists of paper on which a silicon layer is fixed.
