Case and carton sealing is a high volume application for hot melt adhesives. Typical formulas use 20-30% wax, 25-40% polymer, and 35-55% tackifier resin. The basic requirements for packaging adhesives will be described followed by formulating guidelines for specific market areas. The focus of this discussion will be on EVA and EnBA-based systems, which are the most common. 

Hot melt adhesives based on poly(3HB-co-3HV) have also been described [119]. Hot melts are commonly used in bookbinding, bag ending and case and carton sealing and are mostly based on synthetic materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene ethylene-vinyl acetate and styrene block copolymers [119]. Hot melts based on PHAs alleviate the dependence on petroleum based materials and allow the development of biodegradable alternatives based on natural raw materials.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) may also be added if water resistance is required. Another formulation that does not require cooking to develop its adhesive characteristic is based on the cold, caustic conversion of an acid-modified starch (75 fluidity) (fi). Clay filler may be added to any case or carton sealing adhesive if the board being glued is too porous. 

The widespread use of hot melt adhesives includes bookbinding (soft cover binding of books and magazines), component assembly in electronics, consumer durables, automotive fields, and various applications in the packaging industry (e.g., carton sealing, bag making, labels), footwear manufacture (counters and toe puffs), woodworking, and the textile industry. 

Dextrins have many applications, with adhesives being their primary market (11,96). Dextrins are used as adhesives for case and carton sealing. For this application, borax is often added to the dextrin to add stability and increase viscosity. Dextrins are added to adhesives used in the laminating of products such as paperboard and shipping containers. The paper industry adds dextrins in adhesives for tube winding and bag adhesives. Library pastes, bottle label adhesives, envelop adhesives, gummed tape, and wall covering adhesives all benefit fiom dextrin addition. 

The mechanized workstations for the dunnage fill and carton sealing workstations were designed around the supply chain requirements for surge and seasonal volumes, protective packaging of fragile products, and variable shipping carton dimensions. 

In razor blade cutting (Fig. 18 D) the web is cut by parallel razor blades. The edges are cut very smoothly. Due to the lower stif iess of the blades the precision is lower than with the other methods. It is preferred for, e.g., carton-sealing tapes. 

By using waterborne acrylic dispersions, UV-resistant packaging tapes with quiet unwinding are produced. Most of them are used as carton-sealing tapes. Further applications are protection of labels and documents.
