Another possible function of L-ascorbic acid in the cuticle is to promote collagen formation. No evidence for this has been obtained using insects, but L-ascorbic acid deficiency disease in penaeid shrimp, termed black death, was related to collagen hypohydroxylation (39,40). Melanized lesions of loose connective tissue occurred in endocuticle at intersegmental spaces. Perhaps insects also underhydroxylate collagen when deficient in ascorbic acid. [Pg.288]

Turpentine is also toxic to aquatic organisms and may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment. Coating action of resins can destroy water birds, plankton, algae, and fishes. Penaeid shrimp given abdominal injections were highly sensitive to turpentine. Turpentine-induced cellular inflammatory response was fibrous scar tissue in all tissues. Early gill and hepatopancreas tissue destruction, and extensive heart and abdominal tissue destruction was also observed. [Pg.2787]

First, on sunny days benthic cyanobacterial mats rise to the surface and are blown to the edge of the ponds where they decompose. This generally causes an increase in the levels of ammonia, a decrease in the dissolved oxygen, and outbreaks of disease. Hence cyanobacterial blooms can cause husbandry problems and fish kills. Cyanobacteria are also associated with reduced productivity in penaeid shrimp farms (Yusoff et al., 2001). [Pg.791]

In species that do not readily become reproductive in captivity, sexually mature animals, specifically egg-carrying females, are often captured from the wild, as in the case with the penaeid shrimps that form the bulk of farmed crustaceans. Most brood-stocks of shrimps are still obtained from catches by means of trawl fishing (Wickins and Lee 2002), a method that is highly stressful and may result in crushing of animals. Additional stress may be imposed by transporting the selected brood-stock animals and introducing them into a new and confined environment. The whole process of capture, transportation, and introduction could lead to ovary resorption in females. Thus, a low-stress capture technique would certainly be valuable in this case. [Pg.491]

Several questions regarding chemical communication should be considered in this context. Firstly, are both sexes chemically attracted to each other, and if not, which is the attracting or attracted sex Furthermore, are animals chemically repelled or attracted by same-sex conspecifics Cultured crustaceans vary in their mating systems for example, penaeid shrimp males actively search for receptive females after migrating to spawning grounds. Conversely, in the mating systems of... [Pg.491]

Long-term variations of SST and SSS may affect the ecosystems in the Bohai Sea. Limited observations show that the population of ph3doplankton and zooplankton, benthos community biomass, fish community biomass, the index of species diversity, and the recruitment of penaeid shrimp all showed an out-of-phase change with the variations in SSS and SST of the Bohai Sea (Table 1.1). [Pg.15]
