Many journals are published by commercial publishers which deal with the applied side of industrial technology, such as the Perfumery and Essential Oil Record, Food Technology, Leather Trades Review, Paint Technology, Rubber and Plastics Age, Textile Industries, and the Paper Trade Journal. By now, nearly every chemist has had some introduction to the subject of supercritical extraction in one form or another, and it would seem that after scores of papers, newsreleases, and trade journal articles, only so much can be said about the background and early findings, the thermodynamic interactions between dissolved solutes and high pressure gases, the equations of state that can correlate and predict solubility behavior, the many applications of the technology (some of which are in flavors), the full scale coffee and hops extraction plants now in operation, etc. What, then, can a paper entitled "Supercritical Fluids - Overview and Specific Examples in Flavors Applications" give that s new -hopefully, a different development of the historical perspective... 

CA now systematically covers more than 9000 journals. We are sometimes asked what determines whether or not a journal is covered. The answer is that a journal is regularly examined as soon as it is discovered that at least occasionally it contains new information of chemical interest. Coverage, of course, does not mean abstracting all papers in a journal. As a matter of fact, CA abstracts all papers of only a comparatively small percentage of the journals in the List of Periodicals Abstracted by Chemical Abstracts (those devoted strictly to original papers in the field of chemistry). Britain, trade journals provide many up-to-date practical papers, but not all of these journals are in form to encourage permanency of literary recording. Articles on cacao, cocoa, and chocolate have appeared in all publications of the American Chemical Society.

Each chapter in Introduction to Green Chemistry lists recommended reading, consisting primarily of review papers and portions of books and encyclopedias. This allows detailed study of a subject. The introductions to current journal articles often contain valuable references on the status of a field and trends in research. However, the traditional grain of salt should be applied to some news items from trade journals, which may be little more than camouflaged advertisements.
