Prior to formal publication of the research, the work may be presented as a paper or poster at a professional meeting or conference. Although some professional societies and associations do publish abstracts of papers presented at their conferences in their journals, papers and posters tend to have relatively small exposure and may never appear in the broadly published primary literature. Monophyly, in and of itself, of course, does no harm , but those who advocate it do Above all, they do not encourage and may go so far as to stifle work on polyphylic alternatives. Suffice it to say, that distinguished monophylists, as members of editorial boards, including an executive editor and an editor-in-chief, have stooped so low as to summarily exclude from their journals papers submitted on polyphylic themes. Recently, when I asked a prominent monophylist why a polyphylic alternative to the concept of Bauplane was not even mentioned in his recent book, I was told, There is no alternative . 

Dr. Zhang holds several adjunct professorships, including one at the University of Waterloo and one at the University of British Columbia. His research is mainly based on fuel cell catalysis development. He has coauthored more than 200 publications, including 150 refereed journal papers and three edited books. Fie also holds over 10 US. patents and patent publications. Dr. Zhang is an active member of the Electrochemical Society, the International Society of Electrochemistry, and the American Chemical Society.

Selection of subject matter for the book was, of course, a most difficult task. It is noted that at one time a desk of one of the authors was loaded with three thousand journal papers on the subject ( ). Simply listing the papers relevant to the field in a legible font size would make a book at least half the width of that which you are holding. Though a full journal paper on the synthesis has not yet appeared, Woodward s inimitable descriptions of the work, as delivered in lectures, can be found (73PAC(33)145, 71PAC(25)283). 

Many journal papers are difficult to read. To start, pick papers that have an understandable introduction. Choose reviews that are short, such as those in Trends in Biochemical Sciences. Then go on to the more comprehensive ones. Never sit back and hope that your computer will automatically fetch just what you need Many journals carry papers of biochemical importance. Those specializing in biochemistry include the following ... 

The process works with carbon anodes and at a cathode current density of 10 A dm-2. The electrolyte is contained in a plastic or rubber lined bath and air agitation is required. Although a chromium complex is involved, full details of the electrolyte composition are not available in the journal paper reporting the successful development of the new process.20 Chromium is consumed as the basic sulfate and the ligand is described as inorganic. Conductivity salts are required to improve the conductivity of the solution and some boric add is present as a buffer.

I am constantly seeking new reviewers for AIChE Journal papers. One of my most important sources of addresses when I have identified potential reviewers is the AIChE membership list. The number of young Ph.D. chemical engineers who are not AIChE members is shockingly large.

It is worth noting that there is an inevitable overlap between patent and journal literature, as researchers who are registering patents will often be publishing their work in article form throughout a project. One study found that 60% of British pharmaceutical patents had been written about in article form. But of course that still leaves 40% which were not, and in any case the information contained in patents often differs from that given in journal papers. 

Robert A.W. Johnstone, Ph.D., is a full professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool, U.K. He possesses a D.Sc., a Ph.D., and a B.Sc. in chemistry. He is also a Fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). An author and contributor to several books. Dr. Johnstone has published over 200 journal papers in natural product chemistry, catalysis in oxidation and reduction, and spectroscopy. His work has resulted in several new synthetic procedures in organic chemistry that are widely used and have provided some 30 full patents. Part of his research with industry led to a Queen s Award for Technological Achievement, an award not usually given to industrial and business enterprises and not normally given to university staff. The award concerned large-scale manufacture of an important ingredient of timber preservative by a new catalytic method, which produces about 30001 per annum of the product. Equation 3.3.7 expresses the Onsager reciprocal relations (ORR), named after Lars Onsager who first established the principles of irreversible thermodynamics (Onsager, 1931). The ORR have been the subject of many journal papers receiving support as well as criticism, the latter from, in particular, Coleman and Truesdell (1960) and Truesdell (1969). We shall assume the validity of the ORR in the development that follows.
