Recycling clearly has an important bearing upon fibre supply. There are two important environmental aspects to waste paper recycling. The first of these is what is known as the utilisation rate of waste paper and is defined as the waste paper consumption as a proportion of total paper and board production. The second useful definition is the recovery rate, which is simply the amount of waste paper recovered as a percentage of total paper and board consumption. An example of the use of such figures is shown in Table 10.1. [Pg.163]

In this chapter, the outlook for paper consumption to the year 2000 will be reviewed. Even the most conservative projections indicate the volume will more than double from present levels. The more optimistic forecasts project a tripling in consumption. Recognizing the finite limitations of the earth s resources, finding adequate quantities of the various raw materials needed to meet this doubling or tripling in demand poses a significant challenge. [Pg.241]

In addition to its study of the paper consumption and raw materials outlook, the TNT Committee considered other external factors that could alter future paper operations. Two significant predictions were (1) Competitive factors will limit any cost-saving adjustments in paper quality and could even force higher standards and (2) Barring a major technological breakthrough, the real cost of paper will increase (4). [Pg.245]

Other social aspects such as food, meat, fish and paper consumption, the share of Internet users in the population, life expectancy at birth, use of private cars per 100 people, and the annual consumption of motor gasoline and diesel oil are listed in Table 5.1.5 as these aspects are also linked to the energy demand and the standard of living. [Pg.410]

Looking at the world paper consumption from a geographical point of view, it is apparent that the industrial countries of Western Europe, North America, and Japan not only produce but also consume the bulk of the paper (Table 1.7). [Pg.16]

Africa only 7 kg. Paper consumption per inhabitant is less than 1 kg in about 25 developing countries. [Pg.17]

A comparison between population and paper consumption in different regions shows that Asia, which represents 60% of the world population, accounted for only 34% of world paper consumption. Conversely, North America has 5% of the world s population but a consumption of 29% (Table 1.8). An important indicator for the development of paper consumption is not only the gross national product but also the population growth (Table 1.7). [Pg.17]

In summary, the largest growth percentage potential for paper consumption is in the Third World countries, especially in Asia and Eastern Europe, while in-... [Pg.17]

Recovery or collection rate, in percent, is the amount of collected recovered paper for material recycling, in tons, divided by paper consumption, in tons, on an annual basis, multiplied by 100. [Pg.25]

Nonwood fibers are annual fibers obtained from various monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants. Nonwood fibers include straw, grass, bast, leaf, and fruit fibers. During 1996-1997, world paper consumption was about 300 million tons... [Pg.241]
