Paints animal glues

The proteinaceous gelatins in the various animal glues were also widely used as paint media, as well as in illuminations. Glues, the traditional media in Oriental painting, remained the prevalent binders for ground layers in European painting long after oils had become virtually the only medium for the color layers.

Consolidation by organic materials. More commonly, organic polymers have been applied for consolidation of paint layers. Natural polymers were most frequently applied in Europe, including animal glue, casein, egg yolk... 

Esters, oils and fats. Simple esters are used in food flavourings, perfumes and as solvents for glues, varnishes and spray paints. Animal fats are esters of propan-l,2,3-triol and saturated acids such as stearic acid CiyHajCOOH. When hydrolysed by boiling with aqueous sodium hydroxide, they produce soap which is the sodium salt of the organic acid. 

As in the processing of vegetable oils the extraction of fats and oils from animal sources can be regarded as a sequence of unit operations (Figure 9.1.10). In modern economies milk and butter are predominantly used as dairy products (besides e.g. casein paints and glues) whereas tallow and marine oils are used for food as well as for industrial purposes.
