All the references for all the chapters in a given volume are collected together in a merged list at the end of that volume (where they are most easily located). There are no separate chapter bibliographies. In the final list, references are given both in code and in full conventional form, with authors names. They appear in an ordered sequence, numerically by year, then alphabetically by journal code, and then by page number. Cross references to the text citation are also given in the reference list.

To locate a citation of a reference in the text, look for the author s name in the author index. The full reference can be found on the page number that appears in bold in the first column the reference number itself appears in italics in the second column and the page(s) of the text where the reference is cited appear in roman type in the. third column. 

Page numbers in roman type indicate that the listed author is cited on that page page numbers in italic denote the page where the literature citation is given.

The most current method of documenting sources is with parenthetical citations. This format lists the book the statement or information was taken from and the page number in parentheses immediately following the statement. This method is becoming standard practice because it is relatively easy to follow and immediately informs your reader of the source you have used. The best guide to consult if you have questions about how to cite a particular source using parentheses is the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 

The word Ibid indicates to the reader that the source you are referring to is the same as the one that immediately precedes it—only the page number has changed. Never use the word Ibid in parenthetical citations simply list the author s name and page number in each reference.

Like in-text citations, the formatting of references requires great care. The appropriate use of punctuation, fonts, parentheses, in addition to the inclusion, exclusion, and sequencing of information (e.g., authors, title of article, title of journal, year of publication, page numbers), reveals your attention to detail, expected of good writers and by expert and scientific readers. 

References to the literature. References to the original data are given in the text, as Washburn.2 The exact citation can then be found in the list of references, which are given in alphabetical (and numerical) order, as Washburn,2 Bur. Standards J. Research 10, 525 (1933), where the numerals indicate, respectively, the volume, page, and year. The abbreviations used for the titles of the periodicals are those adopted as standard by the International Union of Chemistry (See, for example, Chemical Abstracts List of Periodicals Abstracted ). When the citation is that of a book, it is written as Washburn, Introduction to the Principles of Physical Chemistry, McGraw-Hill Book Co., New York (1921), where the title is in quotation marks, and then in order follow the name of the publisher, the place of publication, and, in parentheses, the year of publication. If the book citation includes volume and page numbers, these follow immediately after the title. 

A relatively new reference citation system has been employed which rapidly becomes familiar with use and then has distinct advantages over the more common superscript number method. In this system no reference numbers appear in the text, in tables, in footnotes or at the end of chapters. Instead, each time a reference is cited there appears in angle brackets a letter code assigned to the journal, preceded by the year (tens and units only except for non-twentieth century references) and followed by the page number. For... 

An effort has been made to give a complete bibliography for each CST (or LOST, etc.). However, only one temperature is usually listed, a mean selected by the compiler. A few badly discrepant observations are listed separately, sometimes with question marks and with explanatory notes. The page numbers are given in compilations (209, 210, 253-6, 296, 391-3, 445-6) and a few others to facilitate location of data. In a few citations to (210), the original reference (given there) is pmitted if difficultly accessible. Binary compositions at the CST are not listed because they are relatively unimportant, and because only a small portion of them are available. 

Beneath each volume number and year there appear all of the references to that volume that are given in these tables. These references are given in exactly the same form as is used in Table I and are listed in the order of their page numbers. The reference "AA036-050V is the only one that appears underneath volume 36 of Analytica Chimica Acta it lists the author s name as B. Fleet, and consequently the full citation is B. Fleet, Anal. Chim. 

The names of authors and joint authors of chapters in the present book, and the page numbers at which these chapters begin, are printed in heavy type. Page numbers of bibliographical references as listed at the ends of the chapters are in italics and page numbers of citations in the text are in ordinary type. 

The reference citation for a journal article should include the name(s) of the author(s) the name of the journal the month, day, and year of publication volume and issue numbers and inclusive page numbers for the article.

Pagination is an essential element of a reference citation. The complete page range is preferable, but initial page numbers are acceptable. 

Data sets are compilations of data, such as spectra or property tables. These data sets are often published serially as loose-leaf services, but the content is not always organized in chapters as in other serial publications. The citation of a serial data set should contain the title of the data set, the publisher, the place of publication, the date of the volume, the data entry number (as opposed to the data value), and the name of the figure or other identifying information. The page number can be included in the citation if page numbers are used in the index of the data set. 

For the purposes of citation, reference style conventions continue to use the URL as the most direct route to the location of a source. DOIs are sometimes used by publishers in place of page numbers or article numbers and should be included in citations in this context.
