Page numbering

The best textbooks for the advanced student of chemistry are the scientific journals. One may, for example, take any recent issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society and look for structural formulas. On my desk 1 have Vol. 103, No. 25 (1981). The following seven compounds are discussed in this particular issue (page numbers in brackets). 

Note. Insertion of fif after a page number, for example 314fif, means and following, and indicates that a reference continues, in the same context, on following pages. If the reference continues on adjacent pages, but in a different context, fif is not attached for example 320, 321 indicates references to the same atom or molecule but in different contexts.

Chemical Abstracts Ninth Collective Index, Index Guide, Appendix IV F. Specialized Substances, par. 215, pp. 2021—2051 (1972—1976). In the Tenth and Eleventh Collective Indexes, the corresponding page numbers are 1921—1951 and 1931—1971, respectively. 

All the references for all the chapters in a given volume are collected together in a merged list at the end of that volume (where they are most easily located). There are no separate chapter bibliographies. In the final list, references are given both in code and in full conventional form, with authors names. They appear in an ordered sequence, numerically by year, then alphabetically by journal code, and then by page number. Cross references to the text citation are also given in the reference list. 

CAS Registry Numbers INDEX. The respective page numbers are italicised... 

Almost all the entries in Chapters 4, 5 and 6 have CAS (Chemical Abstract Service) Registry Numbers to identify them, and these have been entered for each substance. Unlike chemical names which may have more than one synonymous name, there is only one CAS Registry Number for each substance (with only a few exceptions, e.g. where a substance may have another number before purification, or before determination of absolute configuration). To simplify the method for locating the purification of a substance, a CAS Registry Number Index with the respective page numbers has been included after the General Index at the end of the book. This will also provide the reader with a rapid way to see if the purification of a particular... 

What-if produces a table of narrative questions and answers suggesting accident scenano.s. consequences, and mitigation. Table 3.3.2-1 shows a typical What-If analysis for the Dock 8. < in the left in the line above the table is indicated the line/vessel that is being analyzed. To the right is the date and page numbers. The first row in the table contains the column headings beginning with i ie what-if question followed by the consequences, safety levels, scenario number and comments. 11C comments column may contain additional descriptive information or actions/ recommendations. 

Botanical names are printed in italics. Prefixes snch as nor-, iso-, proto-, apo-, are printed in italics and disregarded for indexing purposes.- Where more than one page number is given, a chief descriptive reference is indicated hy the use of heavier type.)...

To locate a citation of a reference in the text, look for the author s name in the author index. The full reference can be found on the page number that appears in bold in the first column the reference number itself appears in italics in the second column and the page(s) of the text where the reference is cited appear in roman type in the. third column.
