Some cast (unoriented) polypropylene film is produced. Its clarity and heat sealabiUty make it ideal for textile packaging and overwrap. The use of copolymers with ethylene improves low temperature impact, which is the primary problem with unoriented PP film. Orientation improves the clarity and stiffness of polypropylene film, and dramatically increases low temperature impact strength. BOPP film, however, is not readily heat-sealed and so is coextmded or coated with resins with lower melting points than the polypropylene shrinkage temperature. These layers may also provide improved barrier properties. [Pg.378]

Because of poor therm oform ability, there are relatively few apphcations for polypropylene sheet. New soHd-phase pressure forming (SPPE) techniques are under development for forming PP sheet. Polypropylene is used in coextmded sheet to some extent for food packaging containers. Glass-filled, wood-filled, or other modified polypropylene sheet materials are used in limited automotive apphcations. [Pg.378]

Olefin Polymers. The flame resistance of polyethylene can be increased by the addition of either a halogen synergist system or hydrated fillers. Similar flame-retarder packages are used for polypropylene (see Olefin polymers). Margarine and butter contain fat plus water and water-soluble ingredients, eg, salt and milk soHds that impart flavor and color to the product. Generally these products are distributed at refrigerated temperatures to retain their quaHty. A small quantity of flexible packaging material, usually oriented polypropylene, shrink polypropylene, or polyethylene, is used to overwrap paperboard cartons. Lamination Inks. This class of ink is a specialized group. In addition to conforming to the constraints described for flexo and gravure inks, these inks must not interfere with the bond formed when two or more films, eg, polypropylene and polyethylene, are joined with the use of an adhesive in order to obtain a stmcture that provides resistance properties not found in a single film. Laminations are commonly used for food applications such as candy and food wrappers. Resins used to make this type of ink caimot, therefore, exhibit any tendency to retain solvent vapor after the print has dried. Residual solvent would contaminate the packaged product making the product unsalable. [Pg.252]

Alkenylsuccinic anhydrides made from several linear alpha olefins are used in paper sizing, detergents, and other uses. Sulfosuccinic acid esters serve as surface active agents. Alkyd resins (qv) are used as surface coatings. Chlorendric anhydride [115-27-5] is used as a flame resistant component (see Flame retardants). Tetrahydrophthalic acid [88-98-2] and hexahydrophthalic anhydride [85-42-7] have specialty resin appHcations. Gas barrier films made by grafting maleic anhydride to polypropylene [25085-53-4] film are used in food packaging (qv). Poly(maleic anhydride) [24937-72-2] is used as a scale preventer and corrosion inhibitor (see Corrosion and corrosion control). Maleic anhydride forms copolymers with ethylene glycol methyl vinyl ethers which are partially esterified for biomedical and pharmaceutical uses (189) (see Pharmaceuticals). [Pg.461]

Many polymers, including polyethylene, polypropylene, and nylons, do not dissolve in suitable casting solvents. In the laboratory, membranes can be made from such polymers by melt pressing, in which the polymer is sandwiched at high pressure between two heated plates. A pressure of 13.8—34.5 MPa (2000—5000 psi) is appHed for 0.5 to 5 minutes, at a plate temperature just above the melting point of the polymer. Melt forming is commonly used to make dense films for packaging appHcations, either by extmsion as a sheet from a die or as blown film. [Pg.62]

Cast films provide a high clarity, heat sealable film and are primarily used as an overwrap for boxes and other packaging. These films have a lower density than cellophane and provide a longer product shelf life. Properties of polypropylene films are given in Table 12. [Pg.421]

Standard 0.25 or 0.50 lb (227 g) tin coated cans are used for packaging Hquid with neutral and mildly alkaline base formulas polypropylene is used for acid—base removers. Steel and polypropylene dmms are used for industrial removers. Viscous removers are packaged in removable top containers. Dry caustic removers are packaged in bag-lined boxes or fiber dmms. [Pg.553]

Increasingly, plastics are being used as parenteral packaging (qv) materials. Plastics such as poly(vinyl chloride), polyethylene, and polypropylene are employed. However, plastics may contain various additives that could leach into the product, such as plasticizers (qv) and antioxidants. PermeabiUty of plastics to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor must be tested in the selection of plastic containers. Furthermore, the plastic should withstand sterilization. Flaking of plastic particles should not occur and clarity necessary for inspection should be present. [Pg.234]

Polypropylene is used in battery cases and in the replacement of metal parts in automobiles. It is also widely used in consumer products, eg, kitchen wares, trays, toys, and packaging materials. Its future appHcations are expected to include an increased portion of the fibers and filaments markets, especially for continued growth in carpet backing and carpet face yams. Film, both oriented and unoriented, is also expected to be a significant growth market for polypropylene. [Pg.129]

The outer packaging must protect the tea from light and moisture absorption. Polypropylene or coated ceUophane outer wraps for paper board tea packages provide a barrier to loss of tea aroma and retard permeation of oxygen and foreign flavors. Low temperature improves storage stabiHty. Properly packaged and stored teas retain acceptable flavor for about a year. [Pg.372]

Water-borne adhesives are preferred because of restrictions on the use of solvents. Low viscosity prepolymers are emulsified in water, followed by chain extension with water-soluble glycols or diamines. As cross-linker PMDI can be used, which has a shelf life of 5 to 6 h in water. Water-borne polyurethane coatings are used for vacuum forming of PVC sheeting to ABS shells in automotive interior door panels, for the lamination of ABS/PVC film to treated polypropylene foam for use in automotive instmment panels, as metal primers for steering wheels, in flexible packaging lamination, as shoe sole adhesive, and as tie coats for polyurethane-coated fabrics. PMDI is also used as a binder for reconstituted wood products and as a foundry core binder. [Pg.350]
