Packaging textiles

Flexible foams are used in applications where a high degree of resiliency is required with moderate load-bearing capacity. Essentially all foam seating is urethane based, including the furniture and automotive markets. Other examples are packaging, textiles, filters, sports equipment, and recreational items. [Pg.202]

Today, plastics are very important materials having widespread use in the manufacture of a variety of products including packaging, textiles, floor coverings, pipes, foams, and car and furniture components. Plastics are synthesized mainly from petroleum-derived chemicals, although only about 4% of total petroleum production is used in the manufacture of plastics. [Pg.2]

The modification of polymers and fibrous surfaces to alter the porosity, wettability and other characteristics of polymeric substrates, will enable the prodnction of implants and biomedical devices which exhibit greater resistance to microbial adhesion and biofilm formation. A nnmber of polymers have been developed that can be incorporated into cellulose and other materials, which will provide significant advances in many fields snch as food packaging, textiles, wound dressings, coating of catheter tnbes and sterile surfaces. [Pg.277]

The second largest PP market is film, both oriented (OPP) and cast. Large users of OPP films are packaging for snack foods, bakery products, dry foods, candy, gum, cheese, tobacco products, and electrical capacitors. Cast (unoriented) film is used for packaging textile soft goods, cheese, snack foods, and bakery products. [Pg.395]

Chemical Applications. Fluidized bed processing has become widely used in the chemical industry. It is important in particular for the synthesis of polyethylene and polypropylene, key basic plastics used for packaging, textiles, and plastic components. Fluidized bed reactors are used also for the industrial production of monomers such as vinyl chloride or acrylonitrile, which are both used to make plastics. These reactors are also employed to produce polymers such as synthetic rubber and polystyrene. The advantages of uniform heat transfer, great surface interaction, and transportation as fluid, whether in liquid or gaseous form, have made fluidized bed processing very valuable for contemporary chemical industry processes. [Pg.782]

Polypropylene (PP) is one of the economically most important thermoplastic materials. The Western European production in 2002 reached approximately 8000 kt. The development of Western European polypropylene production for the years 2000 - 2002 is shown in Table 3.3. Polypropylene is found in an extremely wide range of applications whether transparent or pigmented, such as food packaging, textiles, automotive components, medical devices and consumer goods. [Pg.34]
