In order to extend the two-enzyme system to other 2-hydroxy acids, a racemase with a broader activity was found in Lactobacillus paracasei. This was exploited for deracemization of 2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutanoic acid and 3-phenyllactic acid, which are important synthetic intermediates. In addition, in this case the procedure requires a kinetic resolution step and a successive racemization step. O-Acetyl derivatives of the absolute (S)-configuration can be obtained in two successive repeating cycles. Yields are around 60%. Of course the 0-acetyl derivatives of opposite configuration can be obtained when the lipase-catalyzed reaction is apphed in the hydrolysis direction. Obtaining the O-acetyl derivatives of the absolute (R)-configuration requires an additional acetylation step of the initially resolved and racemized (S)-hydroxy acid [12]. [Pg.198]

For the reasons explained in the report presented during the 28 th IWGFR meeting [Ref 1], major decisions were taken in 1994 in order to extend the life time of the reactor another 10 years. A number of intramolecular Pd-catalyzed 1,4-oxidations of conjugated dienes were developed.f In these reactions, two nucleophiles are added across the diene, one of which adds intramolecularly. So far, only heteroatom nucleophiles have been employed. In order to extend these intramolecular 1,4-oxidations to carbon nucleophiles, it was found that a vinylpalladium species can be obtained in situ from an alkyne via a chloropalladation. The approach is particularly attractive since it involves a Pd(II) chloride salt and could be compatible with the rest of the catalytic cycle. Reaction of dienyne with LiCl, and benzoquinone in the presence of palladium acetate as the catalyst, afforded the carbocyclization products. The reaction resulted in an overall stereoselective fltiri-addition of carbon and chlorine across the diene t B (Scheme 23). [Pg.633]

This component of current assets is crucial to the liquidity of the business. In recent years its importance has been recognised as more companies become squeezed for cash. It is not always recognised, however, that logistics variables have a direct impact on this part of the balance sheet. For example, the shorter the order cycle time, from when the customer places the order to when the goods are delivered, the sooner the invoice can be issued. Likewise the order completion rate can affect the cash flow if the invoice is not issued until after all the goods are despatched. One of the less obvious logistics variables affecting cash and receivables is invoice accuracy. A customer who receives an inaccurate invoice is unlikely to pay and the payment lead time will be extended until the problem is rectified. [Pg.60]

This twin-pronged approach of simultaneously seeking to reduce the logistics lead time whilst extending the customer s order cycle may never completely close the lead-time gap. The ECO method was developed to aid environmental impact and cost optimisation of chemical synthesis pathways or processes suitable for the research and development (R D) stage. In order to represent terms of ecological as well as economic sustainability, three objective functions which incorporate (i) energy demand (EF), (ii) risks concerning human health and the environment (EHF) and (iii) costs (CE), were defined. Their calculation follows the life cycle approach and is based on the data available already in R D. Because the application of a comprehensive LCA is both, too complex and based on data which are partially not available at the R D stage, the determination of the three objective functions is based on the SLCA approach extended by economic issues. Hodgkin s disease accounts for 1% of all new cancers diagnosed in Western countries and for 15% of all malignant lymphomas. In patients with early stage lA-IIA disease without B-symptoms or bulky adenopathy, therapy consists of either extended field radiotherapy or limited duration chemotherapy, e.g. ABVD (anthracycline, bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine) for 3-4 cycles followed by involved field radiotherapy. Radiation alone results in a 10-year relapse free survival of 70-75% and, because of the efficacy of salvage chemotherapy for those who relapse, an overall survival of 80-85%. The combined modality approach results in fewer relapses but overall survival is similar. In order to reduce the long term morbidity of radiation current trials are exploring combined modality treatment with lower radiation doses versus chemotherapy alone. [Pg.722]
