Approach and Results

The preceding subsection was devoted to a comparison of a special exact elasticity solution with classical lamination theory results. The importance of transverse shear effects was clearly demonstrated. However, that demonstration was for a special problem of rather narrow interest. The objective of this subsection is to display approaches and results for the approximate consideration of transverse shear effects for general laminated plates.

This chapter first reviews and discusses selected research on local dose aspects of ozone toxicity, the morphology of the respiratoty tract and mucus layer, air and mucus flow, and the gas, liquid, and tissue components of mathematical models. Next, it discusses the approaches and results of the few models that exist. A similar review was recently done to defme an analytic framework for collating experiments on the effects of sulfur oxides on the lung. Pollutant gas concentrations are generally stated in parts per million in this chapter, because experimental uptake studies are generally quoted only to illustrate behavior predicted by theoretical models. Chapter 5 contains a detailed discussion of the conversion from one set of units to another. 

Several different approaches have been taken to investigate whether there is more absorption of visible light by clouds than expected based on current models of radiative transfer in the atmosphere. Some of these approaches and results are discussed in Box 14.3. 

ENANTIOSELECTIVE CATALYSIS BY CHIRAL SOLIDS APPROACHES AND RESULTS. 

Much information about the early approaches and results is contained in the renowned reference book Dictionary of Electron Calculations by C. A. Coulson and A. Streitwieser, Jr. [30] (1965). Since that time, hundreds of papers have appeared from which we mention only H. Hosoya [31] (1972), R. B. Mallion, A. J. Schwenk and N. Trinajstic [32] (1975), J.-I. Aihara [33] (1976), and K. Balasubramanian [34] (1982). Infinite periodic graphs were first considered by L. Collatz [35] (1978). For more details, the reader is referred to the monographs Spectra of Graphs by D. M. Cvetkovic, M. Doob and H. Sachs [36] (1980) and Recent Results in the Theory of Graph Spectra by D. M. Cvetkovic, M. Doob, I. Gutman and A. Torgasev [37] (1988). 

The similarities discussed here between heterogeneous and enzymatic systems show that we have much to learn by looking at the parallel approaches and results that are being obtained in these closely related fields. 

The present analysis relies on - and extends - the comprehensive theoretical study of Refs. [23,24] on the multi-state interactions in the manifold of the X — E states of Bz+. Like this recent work, it utilizes an ab initio quantum-dynamical approach. In Refs. [23,24] we have, in addition, identified strong coupling effects between the B — C and B — D electronic states, caused by additional conical intersections between their potential energy surfaces. A whole sequence of stepwise femtosecond internal conversion processes results [24]. Such sequential internal conversion processes are of general importance as is evidenced indirectly by the fluorescence and fragmentation dynamics of organic closed-shell molecules and radical cations [49,50]. It is therefore to be expected that the present approach and results may be of relevance for many other medium-sized molecular systems.

There must be frequent exchange of information (as opposed to data) via a common coffee group and(or) periodic seminars on problems, preliminary findings, and plans. This provides continuous "peer" review and critiquing of approaches and results. Exchanges of recent literature searches, discoveries, and summaries of "in progress" and unpublished studies then occurs naturally.

In the current paper, we discuss some of the new approaches and results that have been developed and obtained recently within the context of such molecular modeling research, and in particular with the mean field and Monte Carlo studies of a lattice model. The next section describes the Gaussian random field method (Woo et al, 2001), which provides a computationally efficient route to generate realistic representations of the disordered mesoporous glasses. Application of the mean field theory, and Monte Carlo simulations are described in Secs. 3 and 4, respectively. 

Ascorbic acid is known to react rapidly with nitrite as well as with other nitrosating agents (16). This, along with its low toxicity and known nutritional importance, has naturally led to an evaluation of its usefulness as an inhibitor of nitrosation reactions (17). We have begun both experimental and theoretical studies of the interactions of ascorbic acid with amines, amides, and nitrosating agents. Our approaches and results are described in the following sections. 

This chapter has suggested a number of ways in which current reporters can strengthen their reporting practices to enhance the quality and credibility of their public sustainability reports. To make these reports more useful, it is equally important to encourage more companies to make sustainability management and performance information publicly available, thus allowing users to compare approaches and results across companies. 

The duration of consolidative chemotherapy has been evaluated in several studies. In advanced ovarian cancer, the administration of five cycles of cyclophosphamide, cisplatin, and doxorubicin was equally effective and less toxic as compared to 10 cycles of chemotherapy. Six to nine cycles of chemotherapy has become the standard approach and results in clinical response rates of approximately 60% to 70%, with 5-year survival rates of 10% to 20%. Because approximately 50% of patients with a confirmed pathologic response will ultimately relapse, chemotherapy may be extended for two or three cycles beyond best response. ...
