The Section of Clinical Specialists of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists - provides networking opportunities for ASHP members who practice or conduct clinical research in oncology pharmacy practice. Members also have input for specialty practice educational programming and receive a networking directory to assist in identifying other practitioners with similar practice and/or research interests. 

I was not involved in clinical research initially as a career. I was a medical records analyst/correspondent for a family practice health maintenance organization (HMO). A friend told me about the position, I applied, and here I am, nine years later. I am now responsible for large-scale respiratory studies within oncology, dealing with physician-initiated and industrial clinical trials.

In summary, there are five types of analysis that can be used to assess the incremental cost-effectiveness of a drug or service. The type performed is generally predicated by the therapeutic area being evaluated, the research question being addressed and the clinical data available. For example, whereas a CBA (which converts clinical effect into monetary terms) may not be considered (for ethical reasons) to be the best choice for oncology or HIV-related evaluations, a CUA (which takes into account both quality of life and survival duration) may be considered appropriate.

The challenge for the future is to begin to better integrate the information that is rapidly accumulating from the revolution in the field in molecular biology to the chemoradiation armamentarium. Currently the accumulating data in a variety of research areas in oncology needs to become incorporated into the clinic, where no doubt it will make important contributions to disease outcome and patient care. Several examples of this are as follows.

Taxol has had a most unusual clinical development history. As with many natural products that have been discovered to provide therapeutic benefit to humans, it was the extract of a plant that provided the first hint of the oncological potential of this product. Natural product chemists typically subject purified plant extracts to screening for therapeuhc achvity. In 1963, an extract of the bark of the Pacific yew tree (Taxus brevifolia (Figure 7.2) showed anti-tumor activity. This early work was done by Monroe Wall and Monsukh Wani of the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) under the auspices of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) [3].
