Old vehicles

Vehicle manufacturers must build cars and tmcks that operate well on available fuels. They also specify the fuel requirements of their vehicles. Euel marketers must produce fuels that operate in both new and old vehicles. The consumer, the purchaser of the fuel and the vehicle, wants the fuel to be affordable, readily available, and able to provide a high level of performance. Regulators check that fuels are labeled properly and meaninghilly and that no unwarranted claims are made. They also regulate emissions from vehicles as well as the fuels used. [Pg.178]

Unfortunately, positive trends could not be seen for the megacities in developing countries. The very low income of people only allows for the purchase and use of old vehicles with low technical standards (Nakamura et al., 2004). This is of major concern, in so far as half of the world population (48% in 2003) live in urban areas. [Pg.566]

Data from the EEA (2006c) reveal that air emissions from transport follow a slightly less expressed, but well comparable trend to entire emissions between 1990 and 2004. Table 19.2 shows the share for the transport sector of certain pollutants in the EU 40% to 50% of NO, and carbon monoxide (CO), 25% of non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) and just 1% of sulphur oxides (SO,). In developing countries, and here in particular in the big megacities, the share for transport of SO, heavy metal and particulate emissions (not listed here) will -because of the old vehicle fleets - be much higher. [Pg.574]

However, the effects from automobile exhausts in these cities are similar to those in industrial cities of advanced countries, because many vehicles have a high weight-to-horsepower ratio and are often old and poorly maintained. The horsepower of 85% of the cars in India is between 10 and 14, and 60% of all vehicles are more than 10 years old. Vehicle maintenance is poor because spare parts are expensive or unavailable, and technical competence is low. Consequently, pollution is out of all proportion to the number of cars in circulation. Carbon monoxide peaks of 100 ppm have been recorded at street level at major intersections. As the number of vehicles continues to increase, it is expected that oxidant pollution may become a problem in other cities if control measures are not introduced. [Pg.14]

Once new automobiles are sold, they are driven for many years.3 Thus, the fraction of miles driven by each class of vehicles lags well behind the market share of new vehicle sales. Figure 6-1 shows the fractions of all miles assumed to driven by each class in the committee s vision, in addition to the fractions of new vehicles sold by each class. The fractions of all miles are calculated as the fractions of all vehicles on the road, adjusted by the assumption that new vehicles are driven more than old vehicles are. [Pg.82]

In the committee s analysis, automobiles are driven for 14 years, with annual vehicle miles (per car from the given vintage) declining as the vehicles get older. New vehicles are assumed to be driven 15,000 miles annually 5-year-old vehicles, 14,490 miles 10-year-old vehicles, 7,758 miles 14-year-old vehicles, 603 miles.
