Rescue workers

My day job is as a civil service electrician for the last thirty-four years at the Veteran s Administration hospital. March 5, 2006,1 had thirty-four years with civil service. After duty at the VA hospital, all the rest is a volunteer as a firefighter, rescue worker, or helping the county sheriff and the State Highway Patrol as an interpreter. Basically, I stay pretty busy. The federal government gave us three fire vehicles after the chlorine gas incident because our old equipment was done-in by corrosion caused directly by poison chlorine gas. This gas took the paint and chrome off our fire vehicles so it was unusable for any other purpose what do you think it did to my lungs and body at the same time ... [Pg.24]

The primary mission of the Decontamination Element is to turn chemical/biological victims into patients through mass decontamination procedures by establishing a site capable of providing initial and sustained operational decontamination of Force personnel (rescue workers), ambulatory, and non-ambulatory patients. The Decontamination Element also handles decontamination of CBIRF members, attachments, vehicles, and equipment that have entered the incident site controls access into and out of the incident site handles processing of surety material and evidence while maintaining chain of custody through the site and handles limited area decontamination of the incident site. [Pg.208]

Because electrical lines may be knocked out by emergency events, it is recommended that one or more cellular telephones be maintained in each of the facilities identified in Table 6.1 to be able to call for help and communicate with family members. Communicating with rescue workers and family during an emergency event will help minimize some of the psychological effects that may be experienced. Each building should also maintain one or more battery-powered AM/FM or short-wave radios and several sets of replacement batteries. The radios can be used to obtain updated reports on emergency response efforts and other useful information. [Pg.161]

The natural oils on a sea bird s feathers work to repel water, but they are miscible with the petroleum oils of an oil spill. The petroleum oils, therefore, readily adhere to and penetrate the feathers. The many air pockets within the feathers that normally serve to insulate the bird are lost, which is why the birds suffer hypothermia. Rescue workers are trained to remove these oils using liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water-... [Pg.691]

Various triggers can cause MCS to develop. At the moment, the best-known causes are long-term (over many years) exposure to a cocktail of various, often low doses of chemical substances and/or a one-time exposure to a high dose of chemical substances, such as formaldehyde, solvents, pesticides, insecticides, toluene, liquid narcotics and other chemical substances. Two examples are 9/11 rescue workers and GulfWar veterans. [Pg.214]

The casualty should be removed from the source of the phosgene. Rescue workers should wear adequate respiratory protection. Decontamination of casualties is not necessary. [Pg.490]

Potassium plays a key role in many important compounds in our world. For example, potassium interacts with pure oxygen to produce potassium superoxide (K02), which is used to make breathing devices like those that are used by firefighters and mine rescue workers. The potassium superoxide used in the devices reacts with exhaled carbon dioxide (C02) and water to produce oxygen, allowing people to breathe. [Pg.12]

Rescue workers showed courage when they rushed into the burning department store to save shoppers trapped by fire. [Pg.58]

In nerve gas attacks where the enzyme acetylcholinesterase is inhibited, signs of central and peripheral nervous system poisoning include apathy, mood liability, thought disorders, sleep disorders, and delusions and hallucinations, in addition to psychological stress sequelae. Mental health staff will need to rapidly identify and differentiate the diagnostic characteristics in order to refer and treat these victims as well as rescue workers, who may also suffer from emotional exhaustion and overload. [Pg.169]

Casualties of the secondary accidents include four kinds of people, namely coal mine managers, non-professional rescue workers (coal miners), mine rescue team and the vicinal masses (Fig. 3). [Pg.776]
