Old Line

By making use of the newly defined index, many results that are impossible to explain by using the old line of linear thought can be explained.

Locating power sources closer to where electricity is used puts less strain on the electricity transmission and distribution lines. For most of the twentieth century, Germany s Ruhr region was synonymous with the country s industrial might—big steel plants, coal mines, big machinery, big guns. Chemical manufacturers who license their competitors can of course expect to meet them in the marketplace. The more conservative attitude of old-line companies in the past was based on a desire to maintain the advantages of their novel advances at least until their research and development costs had been recouped, and this is, of course, the principle behind the seventeen-year monopoly inherent in a U.S. patent. The recent change of view towards licensing can be attributed first to the increased availability and attractiveness of the opportunities, but also to an appreciation of the constant threat of process obsolescence. Modern enlightened self-interest, with its emphasis on the time value of money, tends to choose the course with the assured payout and let the salesman handle the market problems as they occur. 

Applications research cannot be measured by factors involving immediate return on the investment. This type of service is aimed at broad industrial fields, rather than specific customers and as such must be exploited over a longer period of time. Through applications research uses and applications must be found for old line, modified, and new products. This group must determine the needs of industry and try to meet those needs with old or new products. If a completely new chemical is needed to satisfy a requirement, the project is turned over to the research department. In this way, applications research functions as a guide to the research activities. Conversely, new products generated by basic research must be turned over to applications research to develop uses, markets, and sales potential. Just as technical service is the...

In the case of LINES, the preference for GC-poor isochores is much higher (90 times more in LI than in H3 isochores) for young LINEs of LIHS family, the only interspersed repeats that still actively transpose in the human genome (Lander et al., 2001), compared to old LINEs (5 times), which practically show the general distribution (Fig. 6.14).
