Rust-belt

For most of the twentieth century, Germany s Ruhr region was synonymous with the country s industrial might—big steel plants, coal mines, big machinery, big guns. In the late 1980s, that luster took on a tired brown tinge. The once-mighty Ruhr, like old-line steel and coal industries in many countries, succumbed to the rust belt syndrome.

A second consideration is that in parts of Western industry in particular, manufacture, called the rust-belt industry in the USA, has been replaced by so-called postindustrial activity (services). 

Globalization has led to manufacmring competition from developing parts of the world, and rust-belt labour conditions which include OHS (even though a good idea) become uncompetitive. One shoe compai sold US 70 shoes which are produced offshore for US 3, and was accused of poor labour, including OHS, conditions in its offshore plants.

In the mid-1990s I relocated to Chicago. Chicago is a great American city. Not only is it an alpha global city [4], it is in many ways the epicenter of manufacturing in the Midwestern United States. Or as I like to describe it, Chicago is the buckle of the rust belt. 

Pulleys should be inspected prior to replacing belts to ensure they are in good operating condition. Damaged, worn, or dirty pulleys will reduce the effective lifetime of belts significantly. Wipe clean any oil or grease that has accumulated on the pulley and use a stiff brush with bristles that are softer than the pulley material to clean off rust and dirt.
